Binge Media

Here it is. The end of our look at all the Hannibal Lecter films. And boy do we end on a great note.

Oh, I'm not talking about the movie being discussed. No matter how our reviews end up going, there is no argument that 2007's slick high brow prequel Hannibal Rising, involving the upbringing of our favorite cannibal, is not a favorite movie among critics. In fact, it has a PHENOMENALLY high Rotten Tomatoes score of 15%. But is it at all enjoyable for anyone on this podcast? I will just say, maybe.

After Red Dragon was released to huge business, producer Dino De Laurentiis wanted to take the character in a new direction. That being a movie that looks at how Hannibal Lecter became one of the most notorious FBI wanted serial killers to have ever lived.

Or does it? Join me, Mike, and Matt as we dissect the film and make our own conclusions as to how this works as a cap off to Hannibal in our cinematic world. We also talk about how the TV show ended, and if producer Bryan Fuller will ever finish his take on this series of stories.

The Binge Aftertaste's first Retrospective of the year also ended up being among its most fun. I want to thank Mike and Matt, who have both agreed to come back on for future series.

Until then, here are all four of our previous podcasts:

Manhunter

The Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal

Red Dragon

And move further down to listen to the Hannibal Rising podcast.

*My mic killed itself right before recording and I had no idea, so my side is a little choppy but that's ok because Chad does most of the talking.

Chad C comes right out of the gate and has not one but TWO contenders for the worst movie of 2018!  Is it Spielberrrge's The Post?  Liam Neeson in The Commuter?  Or this year's Atomic Blonde, Proud Mary.

See it. Stream it. Skip it.  You know how it do.

Welcome to this special edition of the Binge Movie Aftertaste, where if for only one show, I take it back to the format in which it started.

I fly solo here, but that doesn't mean that the show isn't jam packed. First, I interview one of the stars of the wacky dark comedy Crazy Famous (out today on VOD and DVD) Richard Short. Richard proves to be a fascinating interview subject, as we cover a variety of topics such as his time on the Martin Scorcese HBO show Vinyl, as well as how far he himself would go in order to be famous. Mr Short was a fun guy to interview, and be sure to check his movie out now!

But that's not all. I also get friend and first time writer/director of the upcoming feature film West of Her, Ethan Warren on the line. Many things are discussed in this interview, and as someone who works in film and loves character pieces, I cannot recommend his film enough. West of Her will be released February 6th on iTunes. But you can pre-order now!

So, you'd think this would be enough show, right? Nope. I also give my top ten films of 2017. Maybe some surprises, I thought long and hard about this list. One thing's for sure....Deadpool 2 will NOT be on next year's!

Thanks one and all for listening, and be sure to tune in on Friday to hear the conclusion to the Hannibal Lecter Retrospective. Till then, I'm out.

Oh my fucking god, happy goddamn new year!  PeteMC, Jack Valley and Moreno get together to ring in the new year, talk shit about new TV and movies, and get blotto on booze.

It's a five and a half hour BingeCast to kick off 2018 and we couldn't be happier (or drunker).  We go through the remaining 2017 Google Voicemails (all 97 of them), which all will be considered for a Goovie award, and we find that Ed Mariachi's Auto Parts Store is a thing.  TV has us discussing the 4th series of Black Mirror, we get a lot of things wrong but mostly right in that is lackluster to say the least.  However, a lukewarm Black Mirror series is better than most TV.

The Ammon Game comes down to a buzzer beater, and someone gets told to fuck themselves.

What Did You Watch has a bunch of bullshit we watched, so pay attention.

I'm out.

0:00:00-You know what time it is.

0:01:55-Moreno, PeteMC, and Jack. First show of the new year, everybody. Let’s start it off right. And drunk. Discussion of everyone’s New Year’s. #wherethefuckisammon? What’s on the show? Ammon Show, Google Voice (31st is the cutoff for the Gooveys...maybe?), Black Mirror Season 4 review, big What Did You Watch segment.

0:15:27-TV ROUND UP. Paul Haggis scandal discussion. PeteMC is still watching Happy, Halt and Catch Fire, gives his thoughts on Future Man, and The Challenge. Black Mirror Season Fo’ (Spoiler abound, cocksuckers). Moreno watched some Broadchurch. Jack recommends Philip K. Duhick’s Electric Dreams. Mayans spin-off show. Legion is coming back. Oh hell yeah.

1:19:37-GOOGLE VOICE. During this segment, Lawlapalooza 2018 dates are announced!

2:08:15-THE AMMON GAME: MORE ARNOLD MOVIES

2:39:38-New site to be launched within the month. New store/new merch coming too! Dogs peeing and pooping in the cold ass snow/living room/on the back duheck. Jack’s cats. Golden Globes.

3:07:07-WHAT DID YOU WATCH? Talking about movies and shit and how you dissect movies with others. Reminiscing about the old show, podcasts, and related shit. Moreno watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Actors that the boys can’t work with in films. Semi spoilers regarding scenes where Three Billboards made these bitches cry. Moreno gives Mrs. Moreno’s thoughts on Mother! and Pete follows up with his review. (3:45:20 for a glorious song sung by Pete). Jack discusses The Trip to Spain, Call Me By Your Name, Ingrid Goes West, Brigsby Bear, Too Funny to Fail, and Last Flag Flying. Pete fires through The Vault, Creep 2, Table 19, Lady Bird, and The New Chappelle specials. They all team up on I, Tonya and The Shape of Water (Spoilers for the latter). So echoey during this segment. Some Mother! Spoilers. The boys talk about shows/movies they wait for to watch with their ladies. Jerseypalooza (maybe) and Lawlapalooza.

Mother! fucker

One year after the financially (but not critically) successful Hannibal took the film world by storm, producer Dino De Laurentiis saw fit to fix what he saw as a mistake. See, even though Michael Mann's Manhunter has garnered quite a cult following -probably due to the way his 1995 film Heat was received- it was not a favorite of the auteur producer De Laurentiis. In fact, all the way up to his passing a few years ago, he had gone on record several times saying he flat out did not like it.

So what does he do? Back the Brinks Truck up to Anthony Hopkins's house, and bring together what is quite possibly one of the biggest and most talented casts ever assembled for the 2002 redux Red Dragon. But that's not all. There had to be a director highly capable of keeping all the onset egos in check, while moving the film along at a brisk clip, and telling a gripping story. All things that, of course, are associated with the talents of....Brett Ratner??

Join me, Michael Guarnieri, and Matthew Goudreau as we take the trip down this Ratner joint, and determine whether the man behind Money Talks and several Rush Hour movies is up to the task of following in the footsteps of Michael Mann, Jonathan Demme, and Ridley Scott.

And be sure to also tune in next week, when we will finish off the series by reviewing 2007's Hannibal Rising, as well as rank each film. We will also have seen the entire TV series, and give our thoughts on that as well.

Our first BingeViews of 2018 has two polar opposite films, in both story and quality.  Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut "Molly's Game" and the James Wan-less "Insidious: The Last Key" are both rated and reviewed, and Chad C preps us for what's on the docket next week.
