For a long time now, Matt and I have been wanting to do one massive retrospective that would seem to keep building and building to an unknown number. For awhile, it was looking like Marvel was going to be that series. But after Jack and company did their three hour show on it a couple years ago, that idea went out the door. So what could we do that would could take the place of what we originally had in mind? Enter the works of Stephen King. Often called a master of horror, sometimes called a trashy populist, there is no question that King has transcended horror, and made his own brand of fiction not only popular, but the most massively successful empire of published work of all time. But in order to review the entire run of King's film adaptations, we must first look at the very first published novel of King's career, and the films it inspired.When me, Matt, and Adam started this retrospective series, Adam knew of two adaptations. The first one and the last one. He had no idea of either The Rage Carrie 2 or this, a 2002 adaptation for TV written by none other than Hannibal's own Bryan Fuller. Last week's Carrie 2 seemed to go remarkably well. After a series of sold stories full of male protagonists, Stephen King accepted a dare from a friend of his and decided to write a novel with a female protagonist in mind. But fifty or so pages in, King felt the story was going nowhere and threw it in the trash. How did it get rescued? Tolkien's world of Middle Earth, that journey was taken by Arthur Rankin Jr and Jules Bass, with a little Ralph Bakshi thrown in for good measure. But how did it all come about? And why did Bakshi become such a grumpy bastard during the entire process?
