For the first retrospective of 2019, I wanted to take the Aftertaste into realms it hadn't been in. Yes we have covered a variety of franchises and film series. But one thing we haven't done is focus on the resume of one filmmaker and one filmmaker only. Who better to do this with than the master of the 'ultimate man film', Michael Mann. With a wide variety of films and a meticulous style that has attempted to be replicated but has never been duplicated, Mann presents quite a set of films to look at. In order to do so, we once again brought in Michael Guarnieri from the Hannibal Lecter Retrospective to do what he had originally contacted me to do to begin with. A Michael Mann Retrospective.

Thief came at a time when filmmaker Michael Mann was ready to prove something. Yes, he had done a lot of writing for TV. But he had not yet been given the chance to show what he could do with a cinematic opportunity. Armed with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and a consultant who would give him the gem of an idea that would eventually grow into 1995's Heat, Mann made his presence known, and did in fact prove that he had stories to tell, and an innovative way of telling them.

Join me, Matt, and Michael Guarnieri as we look at the 1981 James Caan starring film and wonder if the seed of a future innovator was indeed planted here. And keep coming back as we go through Mann's ten film directing resume!

Welcome to 2019 in the Aftertaste offices! To ring in the new year, Matthew GOOD-ROW called me up and said that we should do a stripped down free form show about a variety of topics, not just one film. So, this is the result. If you hate it, blame Matt.

We begin the show discussing why this space isn't being held by our review of Bumblebee with Nate, and when you can expect it. We then preview what our first couple retrospectives of 2019 are going to be, and this brings up how they could end up being pretty good shows with a variety of opinions. We then dive into our Favorite Films of 2018 list, and this being Binge, arguments ensue.

We end the show discussing what our most anticipated films of 2019 are. Be sure to check back here one year later to see if the anticipated end up being our favorites. Spoiler alert, probably not.
