Biodiversity conservation in the Murray-Darling river system - Erhaltung der biologischen Vielfalt im Murray-Darling Flusssystem

Joachim Bretzel is a PhD student from Germany. He is studying the effectiveness of fish screens in the Murray-Darling Basin. They are a kind of three-dimensional sieves that prevent fish and other aquatic animals, or even plants, from ending up in the pumps and the sterile irrigation canals along the rivers. They cannot survive there. This is a problem all over the world with the increasing extinction of species and the simultaneously increasing hunger for water for agriculture and industry. That is why his work at Charles Sturt University under Prof. Lee Baumgartner, in cooperation with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, is of worldwide importance. - Joachim Bretzel ist ein PhD Student aus Deutschland. Er untersucht die Effektivität von Fischschutzanlagen im Murray-Darling Basin. Diese „fish screens“ sind eine Art dreidimensionaler Siebe, die verhindern, dass Fische und andere aquatische Tiere oder auch Pflanzen, aus den Flüssen in den Pumpen und den sterilen Bewässerungskanälen landen. Dort können sie nämlich nicht überleben. Das ist auf der ganzen Welt mit dem zunehmenden Artensterben und dem gleichzeitig zunehmenden Hunger nach Wasser für die Landwirtschaft und Industrie ein Problem. Deshalb ist seine Arbeit an der Charles Sturt University unter Prof. Lee Baumgartner, die in Kooperation mit dem NSW Department of Primary Industries durchgeführt wird, weltweit von Wichtigkeit.
