Bird deaths from building crashes much higher than believed

We’ve talked before about the millions of birds that die annually after crashing into buildings. However, the statistics have been off. Tragically, the more accurate count is in the hundreds of millions.

Up to now, bird fatalities have been tallied by the number of carcasses found at building sites. But a recent study found that fewer than 10% of birds die on impact, while many more — up to 40% — leave with ultimately fatal injuries. After the correct calculations, it’s estimated that over 1 billion birds die each year from building collisions in the United States alone.
This stresses the importance of constructing bird-friendly buildings — those with smaller expanses of glass and glass that’s less reflective.
