Richard Allen, Wildlife Artist and Illustrator of the recently published book, Birds Of Paradise and Bowerbirds sits down with Mardi Dickinson for the exclusive talk about this book and his illustrations within.
Richard Allen’s work has gradually drifted towards his main interest of birds and wildlife especially after winning British Birds – Bird Illustrator of the year in 1993. Moving to Essex in 1988, and more recently to Wivenhoe, the bird rich estuaries and marshes of the Essex coast have provided an endless source of inspiration and fueled a passion for field-sketching. Richard enjoys the immediacy of working directly from nature, trying to capture the life and vitality of wild birds, and the patterns of plumage, light, water and foliage.
This essential field experience has proves invaluable when working on paintings in the studio, or when illustrating bird identification guides. Publications include, “Concise Birds of the Western Palearctic”(Oxford University Press), “The Handbook of Birds of the World” (Lynx Editions), “A Field Guide to the Birds of South East Asia”(New Holland) and the solely illustrated “Sunbirds and Flowerpeckers”(Bloomsbury).
Such work has led Richard on exciting trips to China, USA, Southern Asia, Senegal and many parts of Europe have filled many of his sketchbooks with observations of wildlife and landscape.

This grounding in field is also a considerable help when producing wildlife interpretation illustrations for nature reserves and visitor centres. A rounded knowledge of all forms of wildlife is vital when designing complete habitat compositions such as chalk streams, ancient woodland or estuary salt-marsh.

“I do always though come back to my passion for studying and depicting the natural environment. After many years working in watercolours I have recently been experimenting with oils, and I’ve enjoyed using a new medium, developing a new style, and revealing in the rich colours attainable in oils paint”.

Donald Kroodsma, Birdsong for the Curious Naturalist. Photo Courtsey ©Janet Grenzke All Rights Reserved.
Donald Kroodsma has 45 years of active birdsong research as his guide, he cherish the birdsong of spring and summer more than ever. An excellent day is when Don is out in the predawn darkness, waiting for first light to deliver the dawn chorus, and returning home hours later with a wealth of recorded song for further study. A good day is listening and studying and writing about birdsong at his desk. A bad day has no birdsong in it.
Don is a life-long scientist, one who asks questions, seeking answers and increasingly deeper understandings. No longer entrenched at the University, Don is eager to share what he have learned and eager to encourage a deeper appreciation of birds and their songs by the tens of millions of others who also treasure birds.
Birdsong for the Curious Naturalist is a basic, how-to guide that teaches anyone, from beginning to advanced bird-lover, how to listen to our singing planet. The approach is organized concept by concept, and nested within concepts, species by species.

My guest today is author Phil Gregory. We will be talking with Phil from Australia about his latest book called “Birds Of Paradise and Bowerbirds; An Identification Guide by Phil Gregory, Illustrated by Richard Allen, published by Princeton University Press on Feb 25, 2020.
Phil has been interested in birds since the demise of the steam trains when he was about 11. Born in Southampton, England he first came to Australia in 1977, but got side-tracked, and spent the next twenty years living and birding in Nigeria, Zambia, the Falkland Islands and Papua New Guinea.
Phil’s major interests are field identification, vocalizations, and the geographic distribution of birds. He is also a writer with assorted contributions to many reference books including Handbook of Birds of the World and Field Guide to the Birds of New Guinea.
Phil is a well-known tour leader, working for Field Guides Inc. and Sicklebill Safaris, and is one of Australia’s foremost birders. He is also one of the most experienced New Guinea guides with many tours led there ever since 1998.

Marky Mutchler, LSU Biology Student and BCR’s 3rd guest in our series called Pay It Forward swoops and talks with Mardi Dickinson about LSU, Brazilian Expedition and her life and interests.
In the third year of her biology degree, Marky (20) is still as keen as ever on pursuing a career in ornithology. Upon graduating, she plans to start her PhD in evolutionary biology. Attending LSU, she has had many opportunities to work in both lab and field settings. She has recently returned from the very first all-women ornithological expedition which was located in the remote depths of the Brazilian Amazon. The expedition focused on honoring Emilie Snethlage, a pioneer in ornithology and exploration in the Amazon in Brazil. In addition to joining this expedition, Marky is also currently working on several genetics-based projects and hopes to have much of this published for presentation at several international conferences in the near future.
Marky has also been involved in several activities close to home. In addition to being the American Birding Association’s 2015 Young Birder of the Year, Marky has also spent the last several years guiding at multiple birding festivals around the US. She has even had the opportunity to work with and share the conservation success story of the once-endangered Kirtland’s Warbler. Marky hopes that the coming decade will bring even more opportunities to share her passion for birds with others and inspire more people, especially women in STEM.

Ted Gilman, Senior Naturalist and Education Specialist for Greenwich Audubon and our 9th guest in our featured series called “For The Record, Legacy Interviews”.
After 43 years with the Greenwich Audubon Center Ted Gilman is retiring at the end of Jan 2020. Ted has lived and breathed nature and conservation his entire career. He more than just knows his stuff, he cares about it too. Birds, butterflies, botany, you name it…Ted loves sharing knowledge about them all and how they work together to sustain the Earth and all living things. His enthusiasm has been contagious and influence far-reaching—he has inspired a love of nature in generations of children and helped train educators from across the country through his work at Audubon.
Ted received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Earlham College and was first hired at Audubon in 1974, as a birdlife instructor at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine. While working on graduate coursework in Environmental Education at Cornell University in 1976 (where he was roommates with Stephen Kress, founder of “Project Puffin”), he received an invitation to apply for a staff naturalist position with Greenwich Audubon Center. He left Ithaca to pursue what he hoped would be his dream job and he has been living that dream ever since.

For Mark Stackhouse, birding has been his passion since he was 5 years old. Mark says, “I can’t even remember a time when I wasn’t birding.” Mark has enjoyed watching birds throughout the Americas, and especially likes to share the beauty of birds and nature with other people. For most of his life, he has done this through teaching and guiding others in the field, and in recent years, through his photography as well.
