In this episode of the Birds of Uganda Podcast, we turn our ears to the unmistakable call of the Hadada Ibis. A sound that can stir very different emotions depending on who’s listening. For some, this bird’s cry near home is a sign of misfortune; for others, it’s a reminder of deep parental love and sacrifice. We explore these contrasting cultural beliefs, the Hadada’s unique place in Ugandan folklore, and the beauty it adds to our natural soundscape. Along the way, we share field recordings, including a special one captured at Lake Mburo National Park, the only park in Uganda where people, cattle, and wildlife live side by side, with the community playing a role in its management.
