“Jesus: A Better Rest”
Hebrews 3:1-4:13
I. Jesus Superior to Moses (3:1-6a)
The theme of Hebrews is that Jesus is supreme in every way. Specifically, He is a superior:
Prophet – surpassing Moses
Priest – surpassing Aaron
King – surpassing David
II. The Unbelief of Israel as a warning (3:6b-12)
The book is structured around five warnings against refusing Jesus due to His supremacy. Specifically, the audience is warned against:
Neglecting Jesus’ message (2:1-4)
Having faithless hearts (3:6b-4:13)
Persistent immaturity (5:11-6:12)
Willful continual sin (10:26-39)
Lack of endurance (12:1-29)
III. Unbelief Results in Loss of Rest (3:13-4:10)
Israel as an Example for the Church in Hebrews 3-4:
Both have had good news preached to them
Faith was required from both groups
Rest was promised to each group
A Promised Land vs. a Heavenly Inheritance
IV. What it Means to Rest Diligently (4:11-13)
