On the wing of a Carolina parakeet, a feather mite named Carol does something feather mites aren’t supposed to do: he leaves a perfectly good home. It’s a such a profound shift in behavior, it could start a whole new species. With acarologist Heather Proctor of the University of Alberta, we imagine what life looks like at the scale of a single feather barb.
Read the original species description: Mironov, Dabert & Ehrnsberger (2005), “Six new feather mite species (Acari: Astigmata) from the Carolina parakeet Conuropsis carolinensis, an extinct parrot of North America,” Journal of Natural History 39(24).
