Very Bittersweet
Oh, my God, this has to be the most depressing novel I have ever read in my life but it's so well written and engaging I have to give it five stars. I suppose what stayed with me the most was that she used historical diaries for research and many of the things that happened in the book could very well have happened to real people. There were many women who lived as men in the past that we know of. What got to me a lot was the powerlessness of being a woman back then. Part of my anger at the book was Sarah who I think is undeserving of such devoted love; some people are so ungrateful. Still, I suppose I shouldn't judge her too harshly, she was young, only sixteen when she was married, seventeen when she went off with Imogene. She was too young to know better but by the time they reached Nevada she should have grown up a little. If it wasn't for her weakness, they could have stayed teaching in the school and Imogene/Karl wouldn't have died in such a horrible accident. The whole time I was reading, my stomach was tight, wondering when the next horrible thing would happen but I guess that's how people back then lived and their lives were short.
Beautifully written
I will admit to having some reservations about this book but relied on my faith in Nevada Barr and, as expected, she delivered! I am a heterosexual although I have relatives that are gay that I support in their lifestyle. However, I shy away from blatant, cram-it-down-your throat books regarding alternative lifestyles. Ms. Barr wrote a beautiful book that will touch every reader. This isn't a book about lesbians-it is a book about love. And it is a book about the life of women, regardless of sexual preference, and the lives they lived. During a time when marriage was the only option and women were chattel, the additional poignancy of being homosexual makes for an outstanding, enlightening book that should encourage all women. Don't skip this because of the supposed content--it isn't what you expect and you'll be missing a wonderful book.
I LOVED Bittersweet, and can't remember when I've cried so ...
I just finished this book, ordered some weeks ago when it was among an assortment of reduced price books for Kindle. The first I've read by Nevada Barr though I've been aware of her from various lists, etc. for several years.
