The Los Angeles Angels are reportedly worth roughly $4 billion after being purchased for about $184 million in 2003. How does a team with just one playoff appearance under its current ownership generate that kind of wealth—and can the sports investment boom continue?
On this episode of Franchise Value, Shana Orczyk Sissel, CEO and Founder of Chicago-based Banríon Capital Management and author of the forthcoming Tough Minded, joins co-host Todd M. Schoenberger to break down the extraordinary economics transforming professional sports.
The conversation begins with Stan Kroenke’s agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels and the staggering appreciation of the franchise. Shana explains why professional teams can offer investors an unusual combination of equity-like return potential and historically limited downside, even when performance on the field disappoints.
But the real opportunity may extend far beyond ticket sales and championships.
Todd and Shana examine why live sports media rights remain among the most valuable properties in entertainment and how competition from Netflix, Apple, Amazon and traditional television networks could influence the next generation of billion-dollar rights agreements. They also debate whether the NFL, MLB and other leagues can unlock another major source of growth through international expansion.
Then the conversation moves into one of the most disruptive developments in sports finance: prediction markets. Shana examines the regulatory challenges confronting Kalshi, how prediction markets differ from traditional sportsbooks, and why established operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel could benefit if regulators impose tougher state-level requirements.
And who should pay for the stadiums supporting these increasingly valuable franchises? Todd and Shana debate the Tampa Bay Rays’ multibillion-dollar stadium project, municipal financing, taxpayer subsidies and whether professional teams create enough economic value for communities to justify public participation.
The episode concludes with Shana discussing her forthcoming book, Tough Minded, arriving November 10, and how her experiences across investing, business and sports helped shape the story.
Sports franchises aren't just teams anymore. They're scarce financial assets sitting at the intersection of media, technology, real estate, institutional capital and entertainment—and their valuations keep climbing.

The blockbuster August jobs report just changed the conversation on Wall Street.
On this episode of Wayve Wire, host Todd M. Schoenberger sits down with Joe Besecker, CEO of Philadelphia-based Wayve Capital, and Rhys Williams, CIO of Wayve Capital, to unpack a surprisingly strong labor market, the renewed possibility of a Federal Reserve rate hike, the selloff in AI and semiconductor stocks, and whether investors are becoming too pessimistic about artificial intelligence.
The numbers were difficult for Wall Street to ignore. U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August, nearly triple economists' forecast of 56,000, while unemployment remained at 4.1%. The report pushed Treasury yields higher and increased market expectations for a rate hike at the Fed's September 15–16 meeting.
Besecker and Williams challenge one of the biggest fears surrounding artificial intelligence: that AI will inevitably destroy American jobs. Instead, they argue AI could become a powerful productivity engine and job creator, fueling new businesses, investment and economic dynamism.
That debate comes as AI stocks face a much tougher market. NVIDIA remains at the center of the AI investment boom—and just announced its nearly $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face—but higher interest rates and enormous expectations are forcing investors to reconsider how much future growth is already priced into technology valuations.
The conversation also turns to the escalating U.S.-Canada trade dispute. The Wayve Wire panel debates tariffs, the breakdown in negotiations and whether the economic consequences could ultimately outweigh their intended benefits. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said this week that Canada remains prepared to negotiate an agreement benefiting both countries, while disputing claims from U.S. officials about why previous negotiations broke down.
And with inflation data coming next, the stakes for markets are rising. Following Friday's jobs report, Wall Street fell as investors increased bets on tighter Fed policy, making the upcoming CPI and PPI reports potentially decisive for the September meeting.
Can AI keep powering the market if interest rates remain higher? Is artificial intelligence actually a job creator? Are investors abandoning AI stocks too early? And could trade policy become the next major risk for Wall Street?
Joe Besecker and Rhys Williams break down what investors should be watching next on Wayve Wire from Biz Talk Today TV.

The NFL season is almost here, but Joe D’Amico says bettors shouldn't confuse excitement with opportunity.
On this episode of Madden On The Line, host Jo Madden, Vice President of Sports Gaming Media at CrossCheck Media Inc., welcomes veteran Las Vegas handicapper Joe D’Amico for a wide-ranging look at NFL futures, Week 1 betting strategy, quarterbacks under pressure and the teams he believes are being mispriced before the season begins.
D’Amico's first message to bettors is simple: tread lightly. With an entire NFL season ahead, he argues there's no reason to bet every nationally televised game, chase parlays or lock money into futures unless the odds offer genuine value. For D’Amico, the number matters as much as the team.
Then come the predictions.
D’Amico is bullish on the Baltimore Ravens and sees the New England Patriots as an overlooked AFC contender. He likes the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC and sees potential in Detroit—but he isn't buying every popular preseason narrative.
His quarterback opinions are even stronger. D’Amico questions whether Josh Allen can finally deliver in the postseason and dismisses Dallas as a serious contender behind Dak Prescott. Meanwhile, he believes Patrick Mahomes still has what it takes to lead Kansas City back to the biggest stage, provided Mahomes and an aging Chiefs core can stay healthy.
Jo and Joe also debate Aaron Rodgers at age 42, Sam Darnold, Bo Nix, the Raiders' decision to start veteran Kirk Cousins instead of rushing Fernando Mendoza, strength of schedule and why roster depth becomes so important when evaluating season-long futures.
And for anyone planning to bet Week 1, D’Amico explains why he relies on power ratings, injuries, home-field advantage, line value and contrarian thinking rather than simply betting the teams he expects to win.
Which NFL teams are worth backing? Who's overpriced? Which quarterbacks can deliver when everything is on the line? And where could bettors find real value before the 2026 season begins?
Jo Madden and Joe D’Amico put their NFL opinions—and their betting philosophies—on the line.

Oil is closing in on $100. Gold, silver and industrial metals are climbing. Yet stocks remain remarkably resilient. Is Wall Street ignoring a warning coming from the commodity markets?
On this episode of Financial Compass, host Todd M. Schoenberger sits down with Mish Schneider, Founder of the Economic Modern Family channel on YouTube and Chief Strategist at MarketGauge, to examine the growing disconnect between commodities and the stock market—and what it could mean for investors.
Mish explains why she believes the rise in crude oil is about more than geopolitics. Tight supply and persistent demand could keep pressure on energy prices, with Mish identifying roughly $104–$105 oil as an important area to watch before reassessing the next move.
But oil isn't moving alone. Gold, silver, copper, zinc and aluminum are all part of a broader commodities story influenced by government debt, spending, interest rates and concerns surrounding the long-term purchasing power of the dollar.
Gold and silver are particularly important. Mish explains why interest rates may matter more to gold than movements in the dollar and identifies $70 silver as a potential technical signal that could open the door to a larger move in precious metals.
The conversation also moves into agriculture. Mish discusses positions in the DBA agriculture ETF and CANE sugar ETF, including why she remains bullish on agricultural commodities. Sugar's recent rally raises another question: could today's environment eventually resemble the commodity inflation experienced during the 1970s?
Beyond commodities, Mish examines opportunities and warning signs across the stock market, including Netflix, Unity Software, robotics and critical minerals, while pointing to weakness in areas including retail, small caps, semiconductors and transportation.
And with the employment report approaching, Todd and Mish discuss what a disappointing jobs number could mean for consumers, interest rates and the broader market.
Are commodities becoming the new market leaders? Is $100 oil only the beginning? And what are gold, silver and agriculture telling investors that stocks aren't?
This episode of Financial Compass goes beyond the headlines to find where the next major market opportunity—or warning—may be developing.

Wall Street is bracing for higher rates—but Jay Hatfield says the data tells a very different story.
On this episode of Hatfield Economics, host Todd M. Schoenberger sits down with Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Management and CIO of the ICAP ETFs, for a wide-ranging discussion on the Federal Reserve, inflation, interest rates, AI, stocks and where the market goes next.
Hatfield argues that a Federal Reserve rate hike is extremely unlikely, saying properly adjusted measures of PCE, CPI and real-time inflation indicate inflation is running significantly cooler than headline numbers suggest. He also explains why he believes Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish rhetoric may have as much to do with demonstrating the Fed's independence as signaling an actual rate increase.
Then comes Hatfield's big market call.
His base-case S&P 500 target is 8,250, with a bullish scenario that could take the index toward 9,000 if geopolitical pressures ease and interest rates decline. But getting there may not be a straight line: Hatfield warns investors about the possibility of a near-term market “stall” and explains the catalysts he's watching.
The conversation also turns to artificial intelligence and individual stocks. Hatfield makes the investment case for Marvell, discusses why he remains constructive on AI infrastructure and data-center development, and explains why alternative asset manager KKR remains attractive as assets under management continue to expand.
Finally, Jay reveals how Infrastructure Capital is positioning portfolios amid the uncertainty—including maintaining approximately 15% cash, emphasizing valuation, and taking a long-term approach while Wall Street reacts to short-term volatility.
Is Wall Street overestimating the Fed—and underestimating how much upside remains in stocks? Watch the full episode of Hatfield Economics on Biz Talk Today TV.

NVIDIA delivered another major earnings report — but strong numbers aren't answering all of Wall Street's questions.
On this episode of Wayve Wire, host Todd M. Schoenberger sits down with Wayve Capital CEO Joe Besecker and CIO Rhys Williams to examine what comes next for NVIDIA, the AI investment boom and a market increasingly being pulled between powerful earnings growth and growing economic and political uncertainty.
Joe remains confident in NVIDIA's long-term position as an AI winner, even as the stock's near-term direction becomes harder to predict. Rhys raises a different risk investors may be underestimating: growing political and public resistance to massive data-center development. Could concerns over electricity demand, water usage, infrastructure and local development eventually become a meaningful headwind for the AI buildout?
The conversation then turns to the Federal Reserve, inflation and interest rates, with Joe and Rhys questioning the reliability of some economic data and debating what policymakers may do as the next rate decision approaches.
But the risks don't stop at the U.S. border.
The Wayve Capital team also tackles U.S.-Canada trade tensions, tariffs and the economic consequences of escalating international disputes, before examining the Iran conflict and how geopolitical decisions could filter through oil, inflation, corporate profits and economic growth.
It's a wide-ranging conversation about a market where AI optimism is colliding with interest-rate uncertainty, trade tensions and geopolitical risk.
The NVIDIA earnings are out. Now investors have to figure out what actually matters next.
