In this episode of "Black Coffee with a Side of Candor" we tackle the topic of showing up for our "strong friends". What is a "strong friend"? What do they need? Are you a strong friend? We talk about the burdens of being a strong friend, what we think our strong friends need, how we can we show up for them, and how we can allow others to show up for us. This is a good one ya'll. In this episode of "Black Coffee with a Side of Candor" we are discussing our use of the word "no" and how we sometime underuse the word "yes".
We so often praise the "Strong Black Woman". She has it all together. She gets it all done and looks flawless doing it. But most times, itβs a facade. We have worn the cape of the Strong Black Woman to the point that we seemingly have adopted the belief that we don't need help. So we instinctively say 'no' to offers of help. But what if we reconsidered what it means for us to say 'yes' to things that actually benefit us?
Let's talk about it!

In this episode of "Black Coffee with a Side of Candor" we are discussing the challenges, potential and rewards of working in the STEM field.
Dr. Nikki Delk is a tenured Associate Professor in Biological Sciences, an endowed Cecil H. and Ida Green Professor in Systems Biology Science, and the Assistant VP for Research Development in the Office of Research and Innovation at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). Her research lab studies inflammation-induced cancer progression and treatment resistance. Dr. Delk was named on the 2020 Cell Press list of 1000 Inspiring Black Scientists in America, inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 2022, and commissioned as an Air Force Officer. She obtained her doctorate in molecular biology from Rice University in order to pursue her childhood dream to be a cancer biologist in honor of her grandmother who passed from cancer.
In addition to her love for science, Dr. Delk is passionate about mentoring and providing research training opportunities to students. She is equally passionate about the creative and performing arts. In 2021, Dr. Delk merged her passions to create Arts for Science to raise awareness of the Delk Lab cancer research program and to raise support for STEM mentoring and outreach through the arts. We had a great conversation around the diversity gap in STEM fields, the importance of having more diversity in STEM, the exciting opportunities in STEM that are just as valuable as careers in entertainment and sports, as well as how professionals in STEM have a creative streak! π
