The ANC Commissioner Paul Johnson in Georgia Ave NW,  working hard to spread awareness and prevention of Fentanyl and its consequences through community forums to seek more solutions and thus prevent deaths of young people in our communities in Washington DC.

Mayor Muriel Bowser in 2015 proclaimed DC a sanctuary city for residents without legal documents, she values the tenacity and effort of these people who work very hard for the progress of the city, they receive the benefits of security, health insurance, education, affordable housing, justice, food supplies, identification, driver's licenses, etc... currently, the massive arrival of Venezuelan and Colombian immigrants, who have been sent to DC in buses with deceit by Republican Governors of Texas and Arizona for political strategies, here they are receiving great support from the government and residents, the mayor opened Office of Migrant Services to provide help with basic needs, she declared a state of emergency and requested help from the federal government twice, but was denied both times, she continues to work hard and forward with the support of the immigrant.

(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Bowser issued the following statement reaffirming the District’s status as a sanctuary city:

"The values, laws, and policies of Washington, DC did not change on Election Day. We celebrate our diversity and respect all DC residents no matter their immigration status. We are a sanctuary city because we know that our neighborhoods are safer and stronger when no one is afraid to call on our government for help, and when our police can focus on protecting and serving."(1)

District Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) has repeatedly declared Washington a “sanctuary city,” driving home the point, in 2018, by denouncing the Trump administration’s policies, celebrating the city’s “diversity and inclusivity,” and proclaiming “we are not a country of fear and cruelty.” Those were inspiring words, but only in recent months has the mayor been challenged to back them up with policies and resources. Finally, on Thursday — better late than never — she unlocked millions of dollars in city funds through an emergency declaration in the face of a mounting influx of Latin American migrants arriving by bus from states along the southwest border. "Home Rule Act" was passed by Congress in favor of the District of Columbia, composed by election of 1 Mayor and 13 Councilmembers, the majority of mayors have been men, and only 2 women, the first was Sharon Pratt in 1991, and the second Muriel Bowser the current mayor who has been the first woman to be re-elected, and she won her second re-election in the 2022 midterm general election, with more than 74.%, according to the current results of the DC board of election, this It had happened only once in the city with Marion Barry in 1986, who has been the only one to serve 4 terms in the so-called "CHOCOLATE CITY", where all the mayors have been black people.

Mayor Bowser has empathy for DC residents because she has worked hard for good progress in the city and she is a worthy representative of women, especially black women in United States politics. I feel very proud of her. (60-second story)

“HOME RULE ACT”

The Council of the District of Columbia is the legislative branch of local government established by the “District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973”, enacted by CONGRESS, and ratified by District voters. The Council is composed of a chairman elected at large and twelve Members–four of whom are elected at large, and one from each of the district’s eight wards. A Member is elected to serve a four-year term.

Finally, in 1973, the Home Rule Act passed in Congress, and District residents approved it in a special referendum the next year. In a historic leap for greater self-determination, District citizens elected a Mayor and Council in the fall of 1974. Voters also approved the election of Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners who represent every 2,000 residents to advise the Council on neighborhood concerns.

Citizens embraced the new Home Rule government as more representative of the local citizenry and more responsive to their needs. The powers and duties of the Council are comparable to those held by the state, county, and city legislatures, including the authority to adopt laws and to approve the District’s annual budget submitted by the Mayor. As the legislature, the Council is a co-equal branch of government and is part of a system of checks and balances similar to any other state government. When the Office of Mayor is vacant, the Chairman of the Council becomes the Acting Mayor. (1)
