The Importance of Having a Primary Care Doctor

On this episode I have a conversation with Dr. Beverly Sheppard who is the Department Chair of Pediatrics at Advantage Care Physicians. We discussed the impact of pediatrics in the African American community and how Black History starts with caring for our children.

As head of pediatrics at AdvantageCare Physicians, Dr. Sheppard oversees the care of more than 50,000 children in the NYC area. She manages 40+ pediatricians and their staff throughout New York and puts into practice her strong commitment to family-centric healthcare, especially in communities of color. With nearly 40 years in the medical field, she is a vocal advocate for children and community health, focusing on underserved populations. Deeply attuned to the mistrust held in the healthcare system by communities of color and as a Black woman physician and leader, Dr. Sheppard emphasizes empathy, education and quelling fears and hesitation toward the industry among her patients. Her drive stems from the unique opportunity—and responsibility--of watching patients and families grow over time. She also believes generational elevation can occur by coaching best health practices early and often among Black youth.

Did you know that Bob Marley was just 36 years old when he died from an aggressive form of melanoma that primarily affects people of color. It’s a sad fact that Black people have the lowest survival rates for melanoma of any racial group in the U.S. The disease is more likely to be detected at a later stage, when it is much harder to treat.

On this episode I had an informative conversation with Charmaine Cooper AKA The Skin Theologian. She is the author of The No Compromise Black Skin Care Guide: The Truth About Caring For Darker Skin. We talked about colorism, how Black doesn’t crack, and common mistakes we as Black people make when caring for our skin.
