In this powerful episode of **Black History Mini Docs**, we spotlight the incredible story of the **Edmonson Sisters**, **Mary and Emily Edmonson** — two young Black women whose courage became a symbol of resistance, dignity, and the fight for freedom.

⛓️ Born into slavery, the Edmonson sisters became known for their attempted escape aboard **The Pearl** in **1848**, one of the most famous escape efforts in American history. Although they were captured, their story sparked outrage, inspired abolitionists, and helped fuel the growing movement against slavery.

🔥 Their strength, bravery, and unshakable hope made them powerful figures in the struggle for justice. The Edmonson Sisters’ legacy reminds us that Black history is filled with fearless voices who challenged oppression and changed the course of history.

Meet **Octavius Valentine Catto (1839–1871)**: activist, scholar, athlete, and Civil War National Guard sergeant who helped raise “Colored Troops,” founded the **Banneker Literary Institute** and the **PA Equal Rights League**, and fought for Black voting rights. Catto was tragically unallied unalived during the **Philadelphia Election Day riot (1871)**—and his murderer was later acquitted.
