The transatlantic slave trade began in the early 1500s and lasted until the late 1800s, spanning over 350 years. Britain outlawed the trade in 1807, the U.S. in 1808, and slavery itself was abolished decades later—1833 in the British Empire and 1865 in the United States.
During this time, an estimated 12,000 ships transported over 12 million Africans into slavery. After abolition, many of these ships were repurposed for other trade, dismantled, sunk, or seized and destroyed by naval forces like Britain’s West Africa Squadron, which was tasked with intercepting illegal slave ships.
