Black in the Garden

Colah wants us all to get matching Black in the Garden t-shirts and eradicate some very stubborn weeds.

As we dig deeper into Season 3 we are Joined by the multi creative video maven and storytelling content creator, Hallease!

Hallease knew plants were important from a tender age influenced by her grandfather, but it took decorating her apartment to claim some additional plant benefits leading to an unexpected way of growing (and killing a few) plants. As a Plantdemic plant mama, Hallease wasted no time incorporating her growing journey into her beautiful YouTube videos. Colah was hype to expound on the connection between defeating ignorance and growing with Leca. Go getchu a cup of tea to catch the vibes!

This episode may not be for the faint of heart but it definitely is for the open minded as our conversation is centering entomophagy: the practice of eating insects.🍴🐌🍴

On Episode 11 of Season 3 Colah talks with Environmental artists and community service visionaries: Tim and Nicole of  Detroit Hives!

Colah B Tawkin is excited to share their story with you that started with A jar of local honey from the corner store on a snack run. That honey helped to heal Timothy from a chronic cough and ultimately lead to an amazing community service initiative aimed to reinvigorate and activate spaces left blighted by Detroit’s Economic depression.

They even took time to drop some Black History facts on Shirley Anne Jackson, Charles Henry Turner and George Washington Carver that will help you to ‘bee inspired’

Colah rings in the Negro New Year aka Black History Month with her Soil Cousins Kamili and Derek from The Plant Kiki to (hilariously) highlight Botanical Black History Figure Dr. Marie Clark Taylor. Tune into the 'Bustin Down Botanical Black History' episode of the Plant Kiki for the whole conversation.

We continue our conversation with Alexander Hardy in the pre-quel from 2020 when he first became a proud plant dad. The theme of mental health prevailed as Alex candidly delved into first experiences with depression during his residence in Panama (land of his grandmother). We learn more about his struggles with homelessness in NYC while becoming a mental health advocate and striving to find a home of his own to feel safe enough to become a plant parent. Since we went deep on mental health and understand that some of our Soil Cousins may be in need of resources to get through thangs please consider these links provided by Alex:

On Episode 9 of Season 3 we take time to Learn a bit from Dr. Hayley about Cover Crops aka Green Manure in the Garden 411.🍃♻️

Colah introduces the sequel to the prequel of her conversation with her writerly friend, Alexander Hardy who recently published an article🖊: Deeply rooted: What plant fatherhood taught me about caring for myself

In the conversation unpacking this dope article we get into Alex’s writerly origin story. The theme felt very much like: vulnerability🥺as Colah and Alex discussed homelessness and mental health as it relates to Plant Parenthood. The meditation was timely: a reflection on the Ari Lennox song, Grounded.
