The term has been called divisive, reverse racism, and an attempt to make white people feel bad about being white, among other things. 3. Alton Wilkerson- University of Colorado student who took an intoxicated woman back to his off campus apartment where he sexually assaulted her. He was found guilty and sentenced to 2 years of work release, meaning he was free to go to school/work but had to report back to jail for the night. He was also sentenced to 20 years probation and is required to remain on the sexual offenders registry for at least 20 years.

In these three incidents the perpetrators were affluent white males and were given slaps on the wrist for crimes that black men would be crucified for. Each of us know at least one person of color, if not more, who is currently serving years in prison for non-violent and non-sexual crimes, such as drugs.

This week on episode 34 of Black Law and Legal Lies we’re doing things a little different. We’re joined by author, philanthropist, community organizer, celebrity chef, motivational speaker and friend of the show, Jayda Atkinson (@JaydaEtc).

Conversation with Jayda Atkison.

We learn that Jayda was offered a role on the Real Housewives of Atlanta and she details why she had to walk away from the show. She’s also been approached to participate in Wife Swap and Monster-in-Law.

Her story.

Jayda landed in Atlanta where she played a pivotal role in the community because of her charitable work and service to others. An example she shares is posting public Facebook posts inviting people who didn’t have anywhere to go on Thanksgiving to her mansion to have dinner with her and her family.

While continuing to service the community, she’s working on her next book and may have a podcast in the works as well.

We thank Jayda for coming by to have a conversation with us, she’s truly a uniquely inspirational person. She speaks life.

This week on episode 33 of Black Law and Legal Lies, in response to Dan’s video about how he and Becky lost their son, we cover medical malpractice. In 2016 Becky gave birth to their son, Chance, prematurely after receiving inadequate care while she was hospitalized. The hospital and its staff failed Becky and Dan miserably by making no effort to save the child, or treat the woman.

This week Ann, Becky, and Dan are joined by guests, Ariel, DJ Ayce, and Nakia to discuss catfishing.

We start the discussion with Ariel who has never personally experienced catfishing but would like to understand how people find themselves in the position to be a victim. Ariel shares that she prefers traditional dating methods and doesn’t necessarily trust online dating.

DJ Ayce had a minor incident where a woman trying to catfish him in a BET chatroom... back when there was a BET chatroom??? He shares what happened in this particular incident and how he would react today if he learned he had been catfished.

We briefly revisit Dan’s comments about dating initially being a matter of sexual attraction. Ariel and DJ Ayce both agree with his assessment.

Nakia joins us later in the show to describe her experiences being both catfished and then becoming a catfisher in AOL chatrooms for entertainment purposes. When asked how she felt about potentially harming at least two people by using one person’s photos, and lying to another about who she was, she explained that she didn’t feel any type of way.

Is Catfishing illegal?

Sidebar 01: STOP KILLING US! #AltonSterling Are there any consequences for cops killing black men? It was recently announced that Louisiana’s Attorney General will not pursue charges against the officers involved in the killing of Alton Sterling. According to the Justice Department, there was no evidence that suggested that Alton Sterling wasn’t reaching for a gun… but there wasn’t any evidence to suggest that he WAS reaching for a gun. We decided to break our regular schedule to do a sidebar episode breaking down the video evidence that is available to the public and find out why there were no indictments in the Alton Sterling case. 

Ann explains why the Justice Department didn’t pursue charges, and why if she were the Attorney General, she wouldn’t have either from a legal perspective. We’ve been to Baton Rouge, LA numerous times since the incident and Dan had a chance to speak with some of the residents. The general consensus is that there was always a distrust toward the Baton Rouge Police Department, and this is prior to Alton Sterling being shot. We all believe that the officers should’ve been put in front of a jury to determine if they acted criminally, but Ann explains how the national media coverage has contaminated the jury pool. The Sterling family will more than likely filing a civil suit against the Baton Rouge Police Department and we expect the department to settle. At minimum, these officers acted recklessly and unnecessarily placed numerous lives in danger, including their own. Since this incident, one officer has been fired and the other placed on a 3 day non-paid suspension.

Though it’s disheartening and discouraging BUT NEVER STOP SEEKING JUSTICE!

This week on Black Law and Legal Lies, Ann, Becky, and Dan are joined by “Officer Michelle” a former corrections officer at a county jail. Prior to retiring Michelle was a corrections officer for 22 years at a county county jail. We talk to her about her time on the job, some of the things she witnessed in the jail, and any advice she may have for new inmates who have never been to jail before.
