In this episode of our podcast, I'm joined by Nneka Symister, LCSW, a psychotherapist working with individuals to help with issues including but not limited to Perinatal and Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders, trauma, grief and loss, parenting, and overall life stressors.

We dive deep into the topic of Black maternal wellness. Despite recent attention, Black maternal health outcomes continue to lag behind other demographic groups. We explore the disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black women and the factors that contribute to these disparities, including systemic racism, implicit bias, and lack of access to quality care.

We also discuss the emotional challenges that Black mothers face during pregnancy and childbirth, including the stress of navigating a healthcare system that may not fully understand their needs or prioritize their care. These challenges can have a significant impact on their mental health, with many Black mothers experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety.

So, how can the healthcare system better support Black mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum in terms of mental health? We talk about the importance of culturally competent care, increased access to mental health resources, and greater awareness and recognition of the unique challenges faced by Black mothers.

But it's not just the responsibility of the healthcare system to support Black mothers. Families and communities can also play a crucial role in nurturing Black maternal wellness. We discuss ways that families and communities can support Black mothers' mental health during pregnancy and postpartum, including offering emotional support, providing practical assistance, and advocating for their needs within the healthcare system.

Join us for this important conversation about Black maternal wellness as we explore ways to improve the health and well-being of Black mothers and their babies.
