Meet Dr. Jon Menachem, a white doctor who wants the best for all!  After the murder of George Floyd, Dr. Menachem called me with a strategy to help increase mentorship for black men pursuing medical careers.  He wasn't just talking, he actually had a plan that could be put in action.  He and I go way back to our residency years at Duke where we cared for patients together.  From the start, we've always had open conversations about race.  This is just another one, but this time, open for all to hear.

Have you ever felt invisible?  Dr.  Julius Wilder has...and at times STILL does.  It's amazing to think that a brilliant MD. PhD like this doc could feel that way.  When I stop and think about it...I've felt that way too.  Dr. Wilder is a Transplant Hepatologist  who takes pride in serving his community.  As you'll hear in this episode, one thing he points out is that a great deal of his success, has come from doing just that...serving his community.

Meet Dr.  Eddie Hackler III, a cardiologist in the making!  This episode is packed with GOLD!  Having served as Mr. Meharry, a Historically Black College and University, Dr. Hackler excelled and found his comfort zone.  Leaving this HBCU, Dr. Hackler says he had a "culture shock", one which he had to readjust to.  Nonetheless, he stepped up and again became a superstar (I should know...I worked with him for a few years).   This man is dedicated to his purpose and is an awesome doc!!  ...I should also add that he's one of the best dressed docs you'll meet

Everybody deserves a second chance.  Meet Student Dr. John White!  He has an absolutely amazing testimony that shows you never to count anyone out.  Student Dr. White was raised in challenging circumstances and got caught up in a few bad situations leading to some bad choices.  BUT with the powerful LOVE of his grandmother and others, he straightened up and got back on the path of success.  He teaches us that with second chances, greatness can be achieved.

Dr. Demetrius Washington is really one of the VERY few black people in his field.  He is a Veterinarian specializing in ophthalmology.  Growing up, he never had it easy and had to overcome some real challenges.  When people told him that he couldn't achieve his dream, he didn't let that stop him.  He knew what he wanted, and went after it with all of his heart!

Student Doctor Hillman Batuo brings a very DIFFERENT perspective to the Black Men In White Coats podcast.  A medical student in the Netherlands, he grew up in Cameroon which was a very different setting.  Student Doctor Batuo mentions says something in this podcast that was very striking...he explains his feelings of awe and amazement when interacting with white people and a sense of inferiority to them.  Hear how he overcame that feeling and continues his grind of excellence!!

Meet Dr. Antonio Webb.  He is an orthopedic surgeon and current spine surgery fellow.  He is a published author and has a YouTube vlog with over 15 million views (check it out).  This doctor has overcome some amazing challenges in life.  Statistics would suggest that someone like him is not supposed to be a medical doctor but he's not a statistic.  Check out his story!

Meet Dr. Ray Wurapa, orthopedic surgeon and co-owner of TruColourBandages.com.  I absolutely LOVE this episode.  Dr. Wurapa has an amazing approach to life; one that is refreshingly positive.  As an accomplished orthopedic surgeon, he could be boastful and arrogant, but rather he is humble and kind.  This comes across in a genuine manner throughout his podcast episode.  If more docs had this same approach, medicine would be a much better field.
