On this episode, we are joined by Dr Inyang Takon, Consultant Paediatrician with expertise in Neurodevelopmental and Neurobehavioral Disorders.
It's always good to hear the perspective of a practicing medial professional who is also Black. We discuss:
- Why she chose to work in Paediatrics... she obviously doesn't agree with the saying 'never work with children' Lol!
- Practicing Paediatrics in Nigeria and in the UK
- Importance of cultural competence when working with Global Majority families when it comes to disability awareness and diagnosis. Walking with the journey with the family as she calls it, a Dr that gets it!
- The current challenge of waiting for years to get a diagnosis.
- Differences in how neurodevelopmental disorders presents in boys and girls.
- The pressure people with late diagnosis face.
- What parents should prepare for medical appointments & consultations.
- Why parents should pursue an assessment if they suspect their child may be different.
This episode is so loaded with so many nuggets. Please listen and let us know your thoughts.

After a long hiatus, we are happy to welcome you back to Season 2! We will be exploring different community members' people perspectives on the issue of disability acceptance and what that looks like for them.
Are you ready?
In this episode, Tutu chats to Nicole Stephens of the Wellbeing Fans, a Health & Wellness page for women looking after children with disabilities. Nicole is a qualified Nutritionist and is the right person to be discussing this topic with me. She is Mum to 2 beautiful children and one of her girls, Amber has special needs. So, this topic is not just theory for her, she really gets it!
In this episode, we talk about our experiences as parent carers and Nicole shared practical steps to look after our wellbeing to make us better parents and lead a healthier life. We also explored our experiences of reaching out to social services to access respite for our children and the cultural nuances in asking for help in our community.
You can find Nicole on her Instagram page @thewellbeingfans which she manages with her colleague, Farah (who she calls her work wife :D)

What's so special about this episode is that there are two special needs Dads involved, it's not often we hear from Dads in the special needs space unlike Mums so this is refreshing.
In this episode, we are in conversation with Tony & Kenny. Both Dads talk about coming to terms with the diagnosis of their special needs children, providing emotional support and share their aspirations for their children.
Have a listen and let us know what you think.
P.S: We have a club on clubhouse, search for 'BSNPSN - Parents Support' follow us for great conversations.
In this episode, Tutu & Kenny talk about preparing for and managing multiple appointments across different hospitals and clinics.
