The Context of White Supremacy hosts the debut study session on the late Toni Morrison's 1981 novel, Tar Baby. The first black female to win the Nobel Prize for literature, Morrison, an Ohio native, died this summer at the age of 88. In edition to editing a number of black texts and compiling an awesome body of written work, Morrison encouraged other black females and males to write - including Dr. Angela Davis. The C.O.W.S. Book club read The Bluest Eye back in 2012. We'll recognize her passing by returning to her work, this time to read Tar Baby. This novel is titled after the Uncle Remus character "Tar Baby." The term has been used a racist slur applied specifically to black children. This fable becomes an important part of the narrative. This book examines sexual intercourse between a White man and a black female. We'll see what this "tragic arrangement" reveals about White Supremacy and how readers respond to this interracial romance.

We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog.

Five years after New York's Eric Garner was choked to death by Suspected Race Soldier Daniel Pantaleo, the murdering officer was terminated. No criminal charges were filed for Garner's death. Thousands of miles away in California, Assembly Bill 392, a new law that prohibits enforcement officials from utilizing deadly force unless they are in mortal danger, was signed into law. It's unclear how this change will be consistently enforced or if this will impact the number of black males terrorized by enforcement officials.

This segment is specifically designed to improve non-white people's problem-solving tactics and revamp how black people think, speak, act and control emotions while on the job. Any listeners who've configured a code to reduce conflicts with White and/or non-white co-workers, bypass demotions, write-ups, terminations or other forms of violence we experience under Racist work conditions should be first to call in with particulars. We are always excited and grateful to hear the experiences of "black entrepreneurs." Please, let us know how "working for yourself" improves your employment experience. We'll continue to review how attempted counter-racists can best utilize recording devices to solve problems without creating new problems in the workplace. We'll discuss résumé tips, references and we'll see if anyone has been asked to discuss Racism during a job interview.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 8th and final study session on Gavin de Becker's The Gift of Fear. This bestselling text is celebrated by Oprah Winfrey and has spawned a series of books and lectures produced by de Becker, a White man. Although the text does not explicitly mention Racism at any point, it routinely directs attention towards White Supremacy with ceaseless references to OJ Simpson, remarks about Al Sharpton and de Becker's dislike of "political correctness." Last week's session focused on political assassinations and celebrity stalkers. de Becker mentions the attempted murder of former presidential candidate and governor of Alabama George Wallace - a proud White Supremacist and notorious villain during the 1960's Civil Rights effort. He fails to mention any of the numerous black people who were assassinated attempting to address White Supremacy. While discussing the dangers of criminals who hunt well known figures, it struck Gus that a black celebrity stalker would have an especially difficult - if not dangerous - time following affluent Whites into affluent White spaces.
