The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixth study session on Vincent Woodard’s The Delectable Negro: Human Consumption and Homoeroticism within US Slave Culture. Mr. Woodard died in 2008, but this book was posthumously published in 2014. University of Texas A&M’s Dr. Tommy J. Curry raved about this book on one his first visits to The C.O.W.S. – emphasizing the importance of Woodard’s research on the rape of black males. Last week’s session covered the questionable suggestions that Frederick Douglass may have subscribed to a more “fluid” notion of gender and sexuality – positing that some of the metaphors in Douglass’ fiction convey homoerotic themes. The session also examined Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl – one of the most popular slave memoirs published. Woodard stresses that Jacobs’ work is essentially the only publication of the time period where anyone – much less a black female – publicly discusses the rape of black males on the plantation.  Continue Reading...
