The Context of White Supremacy hosts our debut study session on Dr. Llaila O. Afrika's Nutritional Destruction Black People (Nutricide). Dr. Afrika is an internationally acclaimed author, naturopathic healer, certified acupuncturist, nutrition counselor and addictionologist. He's surprising death in March of this year saddened and stunned many. He was 74 years old. We planned to read Dr. Afrika's work to honor his extraordinary scholarship, but there was no urgency to select a date. The coronavirus changed everything. Seemingly days after many around the world joked that black people are immune to "the rona," an avalanche of reports announce that black people in the U.S. states are dying at alarming numbers from the so-called coronavirus. The history and continued practice of #MedicalAprtheid, abusing and experimenting on black patients, is one theory to explain the high number of fatalities. But obesity, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and a host of other diet-related health problems seem to be correlated with a higher risk of dying from the coronavirus. The current health crisis demanded that we open Dr. Afrika's work immediately.

Vandyke, an entrepreneur who recently created an app to notify members of a family in case one of them places a call to 911. Instead of having to call several people at several different numbers, the app calls emergency contacts automatically to inform them of your emergency. Vandyke explains his personal reasons and inspiration behind creating the app.

Steven VanDyke, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, has developed a new app called 911 Alert that connects families together when an emergency occurs. Once downloaded, the app will automatically send a text message to up to ten contacts of your choice if ever you were to dial 911 to report an emergency.Most people dial emergency services before calling their loved ones, and so the 911 Alert app bridges that gap by alerting their family and friends of their distress.

Steven, who is also the CEO of Fight...Win...Survive, says that not only does his app notify the caller's contacts that they have dialed emergency services, but the text message they receive also contains the caller's location at the exact time that the call was made. This can prove invaluable in emergencies when the caller is under threat from another party.

The 911 Alert app provides instant relief and satisfaction to both callers and their loved ones, a benefit that a direct 911 call does not offer. That's because emergency services have to ask the caller to tell them their location. Under threat and possibly scared for their lives, callers may not provide accurate details. In other words, 911 doesn't know where the caller is when they call in, but with this app, the caller's emergency contacts will know before 911 actually knows what's going on.

In this episode, Ms. SiSi The Real Infopreneur speaks to MaryAnne Howland about the challenges of raising a son with physical difficulties, an absent father and the ingenious plan she came up with to provide her son with positive male role models, not just one mentor but up to four. MaryAnne Howland is the founder and CEO of Ibis Communications, a branding marketing solutions firm in Nashville, Tennessee and has been widely recognized for her business success including invites to several summits at the White House. With those kinds of social and professional relations, Howland had access to a pool of successful black men to potentially mentor her son.

When MaryAnne Howland’s son was turning thirteen she organized a “Black Mitzvah” rite of passage celebration for him. Max is one of the one-in-three children in America being raised without a father in the home. Among African-Americans, that number is reported to be as high as 72 percent. To help fill the father-shaped hole in Max’s life as he transitioned from boyhood to manhood, MaryAnne invited four men from different corners of her life –an engineer, a philanthropist, a publisher, and a financial planner–to become Max’s mentors.

Max has faced many challenges. As a boy without a consistent father figure in his life, as an African-American male in a time when race relations in this country continue to be fraught, and also because Max was born premature and as a result has cerebral palsy, he has had to be a true warrior. On the brink of manhood, his mother wanted to give him the benefit of men who could answer some of the questions she felt that she, as a woman, might not be able to answer. Through his adolescence, Max’s mentors have shared valuable insights with him about what it means to be a good man in the face of life’s challenges. The Context of White Supremacy hosts our sixth study session on Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington's Packing Them In: An Archaeology of Environmental Racism in Chicago, 1865-1954. An environmental epidemiologist, environmental engineer and environmental historian, Dr. Washington is Chief Environmental Research Scientist at Environmental Health Research Associates, LLC. With research experience examining the impact of industrial pollution on human health and ecosystems, she's the creator and editor-in-chief of the first international environmental health disparities journal, Environmental Justice. We'll continue examining her 2004 text, Packing Them In: An Archaeology of Environmental Racism in Chicago, 1865-1954. Chicago is a significant city in North America, and black people have sojourned to this region for over a century. Consequently, Whites have devoted a staggering amount of time, energy and resources to study, warehouse, terrorize and poison the black people of the "windy city." During last week's session Dr. Hood described the great migration of the late 19th and 20th century. Legions of black people labored to escape terrorism in the south and migrated to western and northern cities like Chicago. Consequently, northern Racists studied and terrorized black newcomers. In Chicago - and elsewhere - black people were regarded as a medical menace. Whites claimed black people were a vector for disease to contaminate pure Whites. However, Dr. Hood notes that one major result of the 1871 great Chicago fire was the relocation of vice - prostitution and gambling - to the black part of town. The reading also detailed the dozens of bombings used to terrorize and punish black residents for attempting to purchase houses in the White section of town. Even some Whites were subjected to violence for violating the rules of White Supremacy.
