The BWGTB podcast (and newsletter) was created by Qubilah (pronounced kwa-bee-lah) Huddleston who helps Black women reclaim their time and energy while pursuing their biggest and wildest dreams. Qubilah dreams of a world where more Black women collectively trade in their superwoman or magician capes for rest, connection, and community.

She’s the fiercest advocate for Black women’s well-being and emphatically declares that Black women will mammy and mule no more.

As a recovering perfectionist and high-achiever, Qubilah intimately knows the struggle of trying to live up to societal expectations. With the help of culturally-supportive therapy and a supportive network of friends and colleagues, she has successfully adopted strategies that have helped her and others strive for authenticity and connection over exceptionalism and individualism.

Soooooo, in true Qubilah fashion, I’ve done something completely out of order. But you know what, I’m making peace with it. I can do what I can do when I can do it, ya know?

Anyway, if you didn’t know, Black Women Get to Be includes a podcast, but I honestly haven’t had the bandwidth to create much of anything. My job zaps a lot of my creative energy, so alas, things have been slow moving. So, there is no official trailer yet. No set schedule. Nada. Just vibes! Jk, but you get where I’m going with this.

Nonetheless, I’m super excited to bring you this special collaboration episode with Theadora of The Mediocre Black Woman. When I first found her Substack, I new we would become internet besties. Next thing I know, we were soon trading DMs and plotting on our first of many collabs.

Despite no official podcast launch, you are in for a treat. In this episode, which we’ll called Episode 00: “Innies, Outties, and Black Women in Severance,” Theadora and I dive into the world of Severance—an Apple TV show about a world in which you can “sever” your work self from your home self. When I first watched this show in 2023 while quarantined in a hotel room at a work retreat (the irony), I was captivated by the show’s premise.

HOWEVER. The way Black characters, particularly Black women, fit and don’t fit into the severance world got me thinking—a lot. Fast forward to 2025—Season 2 drops in January and I was ready to dive all the way in. I waited until about five episodes had dropped (they’re released every Friday), and then binged them all in one night after a long day at work. There’s newness, but also more of the same which is what led Theadora and I to this special episode.

It’s about an hour long, so it’s perfect to listen to while taking a longer drive or doing your Saturday morning cleaning. Or you can listen to it with your headphones while you veg out on the couch. Pick your pleasure!

I truly hope y’all enjoy this one. I would love to hear your hot takes and how you view the Black female characters in the show. Some questions for you to consider as you tune in:
