Melissa is the owner and curator of Springtime, an annual art show that highlights artists at various stages of their careers. The exhibition showcases works across diverse mediums, including painting, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture. Episode 36 features Jackson Reid Briggs.

In this episode, i sit down with Brisbane-born frontman Jackson Reid Briggs. From his early days in Brisbane being influenced by bands such as The Saints, Jackson's music journey led him to Melbourne, where he formed several bands, including the more recently formed Split System and Jackson Reid Briggs and The Heaters.

On this episode Jackson speaks on how Split System came about, growing up in Brisbane, the challenges of balancing fatherhood with band tours and work, and more.

Episode 35 features Jaydon Martin, a Brisbane-born filmmaker currently residing in Melbourne.

Jaydon's debut feature film Flathead has just recently been screened throughout MIFF. The docufiction film follows Cass Cumerford a man in his later years , who finds his way back to the region of Bundaberg, the place he grew up in. The film follows Cass and the thoughts that spring from being a man in his later years, working through grief and mortality. The film showcases the vunerability of what it is to be human and where the people of Bundaberg go in order to find comradery, community and peace.

On this episode, Jaydon speaks on the making of Flathead, his time living in Wales, grief, spirituality, religion, rural Australia, community, and more.

Episode 34 features Dev, a Melbourne-born musician and animator. Dev makes music under the name Death of Labour, releasing his debut album this year, 'Wurundjeri Spur Is Burning'.

I was first introduced to Dev through Wilhelm Philipp, a Melbourne-based photographer. Wilhelm published a story on Dev, 'A near miss with the abyss,' which gave Dev the first real chance to talk in detail about a skating accident that occured in 2021.

Dev was out one night with some friends skating when his head hit the pavement. Dev’s fall resulted in him fracturing his skull, with the scans revealing he had a brain bleed on the right-hand side of his head and residual damage to the front of his brain as well as subdural bleeding. Dev was in a coma for 13 days and went through an extensive rehab process over a 3-year period.

In this episode, Dev speaks on his early childhood, mortality, rehab, recovery, mental health, musical influences, and more.

Episode 33 features David Mirra. 

Mirra's story is pretty unique and special, having spent 8 years at Box Hills VFL program becoming the club's longest-serving captain, playing 150 games, attaining two premierships, and winning himself a couple best and fairest. Just as Mirra was ready to hang up the boots and make his way to local football, he got the call from Hawthorn and had his AFL dream come true at the age of 27. Mirra's story is one of persistence and the motto of just showing up. 

Mirra speaks on growing up in Rowville, his mentality throughout his footballing journey, persistence, family, early life, day-to-day expectations as an AFL footballer, and more.

Episode 32 features Melbourne-based musician and visual artist Paris Richens. Paris is a member in the bands Parsnip and Hierophants and also goes by the solo guise of PP Rebel. Parsnip's album 'Behold' releases this week via Anti Fade Records.

Episode 31 features Buddhist practitioner and teacher Damian Auton.

Damian has been a practitioner and teacher for over a decade, teaching at Kadampa's meditation centre in the Dandenong Ranges and also teaching weekly classes in Hampton. Damian lived a life of travelling, teaching, rock climbing, and cycling before turning to Buddhism.

Damian speaks on his journey, Buddhist teachings, meditation, current practices, how to limit distractions, the modern world, and more.

Episode 30 features Peter Milne, a Melbourne-born photographer and visual artist.

Milne's early photography documented Melbourne's punk scene through the 70's and 80's. Milne would also later document Melbourne's early comedy scene, capturing the likes of Bill Hicks and more who would float through and tour Australia. Milnes current work tends to engage more montage and collage influences, which often circulate as sort of photo narratives and dream-like sequences.

Milne speaks on why he was always drawn to capture performers, comedians, and musicians, meeting and photographing Bill Hicks, what photography and art have given him, his life path, living simply, and more.

Episode 29 features Mikey Young, guitarist and member of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Green Child, Ooga Boogas, and Total Control. It's a bit different to do a write-up here on Mikey, as he's sort of become this underground music mystic who's had his hands in countless well-respected albums and recordings and, as of more recent years, has had international artists, labels, and bands reach out to him to have their work mixed and mastered. 

In this chat, Mikey speaks about the early days of Eddy Current and Total Control, growing up in Frankston, working through fear, his love for film, living without a smart phone, staying independent as a band, labels, and more.

Episode 28 features Emily Jans, a boxer, kickboxer, and drummer in Australian hardcore band Straightjacket Nation. Emily, who won the 2012 Australian Amateur Boxing title and now retired, is training and coaching others in her new clinic, 'Off the Wall', a boxing community space in Collingwood also run by Kristy Harris, a x4 time National Boxing Champ.

In this episode, Emily speaks about finding the drums as a youth, her boxing and kickboxing journey, how Straightjacket Nation formed, why she felt the need to start 'Off the Wall' with Kristy, and more.
