    • Psalm 78:1-8: Give ear, O my people, to my law; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children; That the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, That they may arise and declare them to their children, That they may set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments; And may not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not set its heart aright, And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

    • Prelude
    • Hymn 211 - Built On the Rock the Church Doth Stand (View): vv. 1, 3, 6, 7
    • Matthew 7:24-29: “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

    • Matthew 13:44-45: The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
    • The Word Was God (Rosephanye Powell): In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made, that have been made. Nothing was made, He has not made. All things were made by Him. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
    • 1 Corinthians 1:22-31: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Shall glory, praise, and honor be Now and throughout eternity. Amen. J. Olearius, 1611-84; Tr. M. Loy, 1828-1915. Setting by Jacob B. Weber.

    Order of Service:

    • Prelude
    • Hymn 492 - The Law of God is Good and Wise (View): vv. 1 - 4
    • The Conclusion of the Commandments (p. 32): What does God say about all these commandments? He says, “I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Ex. 20: 5–6) What does this mean? God threatens to punish all who break these commandments. Therefore, we should fear His wrath and not do anything against them. But He promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments. Therefore, we should also love and trust in Him and gladly do what He commands.

    • Prelude
    • Responsive Reading from James chapter 1: P: Blessed is the man who endures temptation; C: For when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. P: Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; C: For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. P: Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, C: And comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. P: Of His own will He brought us forth by the Word of truth, C: That we might be a kind of first-fruits of His creatures. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen.
    • Hymn 486 - The Church's One Foundation (View): vv. 1-3
    • Acts 15:12-20: The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. Simon has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written: ‘After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things’— things known from long ago.’ “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.”
