Blood and Black Rum Podcast - A Cult Film / Horror Podcast

We'll come right out and say it - we weren't huge fans of Evil Dead Rise. In this episode, we attempt to document exactly why it didn't work for us. We know we seem to be in the minority here, but there were just some things that didn't fit, even besides the fact that this film really only feels like an Evil Dead movie in name alone. We talk about the gore, the lack of character reaction, the misuse of the apartment setting, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Ommegang's Gnommegang Belgian Blonde Strong Ale!

Next time: Cruel Intentions!

We're a little late to Robert Eggers' 2019 opus The Lighthouse, but after watching it we both became instant fans of this psychological thriller/lonely men drama about two lighthouse keepers stuck on an island with potential supernatural elements. We talk about the various themes and interpretations you can come away with after watching the movie, the excellent performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, the beauty of the film's cinematography and Canadian landscape, and a whole lot more. We hope you enjoy this episode and encourage you to watch the film! We're also drinking Equilibrium Brewery's Astronomical Twilight, a sour IPA with watermelon, strawberry, and lime.

Hopefully next up: Evil Dead Rise!

For this episode, we're talking about Sam Peckinpah's notorious classic psychological thriller Straw Dogs! Dustin Hoffman and Susan George star as a couple terrorized in Cornwall after they find out the locals are just as prone to violence as Americans. We talk about the themes, that r* scene that got the film an X rating, what Peckinpah means by the film's conclusion, and a lot more. We're also drinking the Fidens x Vitamin Sea collaboration Ducks & Axes!

Next up: The Lighthouse!

We ventured out to theaters as Courteney Cox requested to see Scream VI and we have some opinions. If you remember from our episode on Scream (5), we were a bit mixed on how we felt about that one and we're pretty much the same on this one too. There are some hits, some misses, and we talk about a lot of plot holes throughout. Also - why is Danny in this movie? We're drinking Thin Man Brewery/Replay Brewing's Cute and Fuzzy Bunny Gang Carrot Cake Sour!

We're late on Black History Month but that's no reason to skip a blaxploitation movie. This time we're talking 1971's Shaft starring Richard Roundtree as the titular hero. We talk the black hero of blaxploitation, the film's significance, the Isaac Hayes soundtrack, groovy boobs, and a whole lot more! We're also drinking Yuengling's Hershey's Porter!

Next up: not returning to Woodsboro in Scream VI!

We're doing a poliziotteschi for our new episode, a genre we have never done before. This time we're taking on Umberto Lenzi's Almost Human (AKA The Executioner, The Death Dealer, Milan Hates), which was recently released on Blu-ray by Severin Films. We talk about the film's vigilante politics, its focus on a sociopathic criminal, the Ennio Morricone soundtrack, and a lot more!

We're also drinking Sierra Nevada's Cryo Hop Torpedo IPA!

Next up - returning to blaxploitation with Shaft!

If it seems like deja vu, that's because Groundhog Day was last week and we missed our chance to get this episode up. However, in the spirit of the film, we're doing it now - and you'll like it! Here we talk about the seasonal seminal favorite Bill Murray movie that set into motion all of the other "reliving the same day" movies; we discuss the gaslighting going on in this movie, its classification as a romcom, the excellent assholeishness of Murray, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking New Belgium's new Fat Tire Ale recipe!

We said we were doing a giallo, and we were semi-faithful; while Dario Argento's Inferno isn't technically a giallo, it does have facets of one. We talk about this sequel to Suspiria and find new enjoyment in accepting the movie for what it is - a different take on the Three Mothers, with a unique approach to the subject matter that drives more into the dream-like than reality. We're discussing the crazy antics, the beautiful set design, some elaborate kills, and a whole lot more. Pair this with our previous episode on Suspiria for a great double-feature. We're also drinking Mortalis' Hydra: Strawberry + Blueberry + Boysenberry sour.

Up next: reliving Groundhog Day!

It's yet another Friday the 13th, so we might as well pick up where we left off! 3 years ago (wow!) we covered Part IV, and it's only fair we give the Jason-less A New Beginning a fair shake. Here we talk about how much the film beats you over the head about Roy, the enchiladas, the improperly-run mental health clinic, Debi Sue's Voorheeses, and more! We're also drinking Saranac Brewery's throwback Black and Tan!

Next up in two weeks: Inferno

When you think New Year's, you think a fresh start... growth... a chance at redemption. None of these things are present in Ghostkeeper, nor is there much New Year's celebrating. However, it is one of the few New Year's-related horror movies left to cover, and we couldn't help but check out this movie that includes a Wendigo creature that... doesn't really do anything. We talk about the slow pace, the snowmobiling, Marty being an asshole, and a whole lot more on this special New Year's episode!
