Westward Ho! continues with a look at The Duke and his western "romantic" comedy McLintock! While neither of us are John Wayne fans, we thought it only appropriate to include one of his films in this series, and we picked one that has the appropriate amount of misogyny. From spankings to clay slide fights, we pick apart the very odd, fetish-y film that stars not just John Wayne but also his son Patrick - a true family affair.
Stick with us all August for our Red Hot Action Summer!
Howdy folks! We're hitting the old dusty trail with Red Hot Action Summer: Westward Ho!, and we start it off with a banger from Sam Peckinpah (literally - there are a lot of squibs). We talk about this American western that follows a group of outlaws recognizing that their way of life needs to change, thanks to the exploits of the Mexican Revolution. We discuss the violence, the familiar themes, and even somehow get the Vietnam War in there.
Listen in all August as we tackle American westerns in our Red Hot Action Summer!
We went out to see Evil Dead Burn to continue our coverage of the franchise; while we were viscerally entertained, our enjoyment of the film critically was a lot different than just admiring the creative gore and cinematography. We get into a whole lot of conversation about the franchise itself, the feeling that this movie is slapped with the Evil Dead moniker even if it doesn't really feel like the series, and a lot more.
We're also drinking Ommegang's collaboration with Prison City Brewing, the Neon Riot Belgian IPA!
Celebrate July 4th and America's 250th anniversary with one of the most jingoistic films depicting the American Revolutionary War, The Patriot! In this episode, we talk about putting the fiction in historical fiction, ponder whether Mel Gibson was right for the job, and feel perplexed about the racial discussion or lack thereof in the film. We're also drinking a patriotic Big Sipz, the 'Merican flavor, weighing in at 16%! Apologies if things get a bit messy.

We've got two firsts on this episode: a Brian De Palma film, and a Robert De Niro starring role. We're talking about 1970's Hi, Mom!, a unique experience from De Palma that ranges from topics like home video, voyeurism, the Vietnam War, the Black power movement, and a lot more. We break down the elements in this surprisingly complex movie, and ultimately talk about how truly funny it is.
We're also drinking Saranac Brewing's Wildberry Ale!

Next up: we celebrate America's 250th with The Patriot!
Happy Pride Month! We're celebrating with a movie that may just have Robin Williams' most handsome appearance - The Birdcage! In this very gay episode, we discuss everything from Nathan Lane's expertly flamboyant performance, to the themes of acceptance and more importantly, actually being yourself, to Hank Azaria's buttcheeks. We're also drinking Tree House Brewing's Double Rainbow double IPA for an extra thematic resonance.

We'll be back in a couple weeks with more episodes!
We saved the best (or worst) for last. Battlefield Earth has a reputation for being one of the most god-awful movies ever made, and we have to admit, it's definitely a possibility. We talk about the things that others have probably talked about before, including the ridiculous Psychlo designs, the terrible plot, multitude of Dutch angles, and we also dive into Scientology a little bit (and how stupid it is, yes we mean that as an insult).
We're also drinking Other Half Brewing x Junior's collaboration, the Strawberry Dream double dry-hopped IPA with oat cream and strawberries.

That does it for this year's Difficult Films, but we'll be back in a couple weeks with more standard coverage!
Tom Green takes a proverbial dump on culture with Freddy Got Fingered, an almost meta-textual take on giving an idiot a lot of money to fuel his creative desires. In this film you'll find Green donning a dead deer, playing music with sausages, and caning a disabled woman's legs; you'll also see some intentionally dumb-smart humor on display. Here we disagree with the Razzy nomination and the misunderstood belief that this is a "bad" movie.
We're also drinking Keystone Light's new Apple beer!

We've got one final film in this edition of Difficult Films next week!
Everyone knows the legacy of The Exorcist, and conversely everyone knows the infamy of Exorcist II: The Heretic, a deeply hated follow-up to the original that jettisoned most of what made it work. Here we talk about the convoluted direction and ideas, the poor soundstage work, the Linda Blair fetishism (creepy!) and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Sixpoint Brewing Company's Resin DIPA!

20:00-end Exorcist II: The Heretic
Difficult Films continues the month of May!
Continuing our series on the purported "bad movies" in cinematic history, we're covering Razzie nominee Showgirls! We've been fans of Paul Verhoeven around here for a while, so to see his name lambasted for a movie that is not nearly as bad as everyone would have you believe is something we will not stand for! We reevaluate this film and give it the respect it's due, while also documenting some of its flaws too.
We're also drinking Lawson's Finest Liquids' Lager!
Approximate timeline
0:00-15:00 Intro
15:00-25:00 Beer talk
25:00-end Showgirls
Difficult Films continues throughout the month of May!
