Friends, two Sundays left in our season and this week I want to talk about the Blood & Thunder of mob mentality. In the past few years, we have witnessed the power and devastation of the mob. While the phenomenon dates back thousands of years, a certain mob mentality is recognizable within certain aspects of our culture and current events: Boxing Day shopping mobs, sports fan mobs, the trucker convoy, the January 6 insurrection, and of course Twitter mobs. Anytime there is a collective motivated by anger and accusations, conditions are ripe for Blood & Thunder. This Sunday, I want to get under the phenomenon of the mob and explore how it works, why it is so seductive and dangerous, and of course, how Jesus shows us a way to avoid and resist the mob mentalities we encounter today.
