Join us for episode 35, or rather 34 Part II, as we talk all things GPTs.

Though the public GPT marketplace is delayed until the new year, and some small performance issues persist, we’re still incredibly excited to see how the GPT ecosystem evolves. Similarly to the tech it’s built on, we see a massive amount of unrealized potential in building, and we’re hopeful the revenue sharing with the public marketplace will spur some action. MSFT also announced the potential for GPTs to interoperate with Bing - introducing a much larger addressable market in Bing users, though creation of GPT’s will still be reserved for Plus users. Lots to unfold.

We speak to our personal GPT builds, including Erich’s mission to build ~5 a week, streaming the creation on YouTube in hopes to showcase just how fun and accessible it really is.

And we’re back this week for Episode 34! Join us as we record in the same room for the first time, and certainly not the last. 

Last episode ended with Sam Altman’s departure from OpenAI and Erich’s hot take that he would be back before too long... As OpenAI faced the potential reality of loosing 700+ employees, Altman is indeed back as CEO within five days of his termination. In short, there’s no good answer and much conjecture as to what precipitated these events, but join us as we explore it all.

Next up we explore Google’s latest announcement, the release of Gemini, their ChatGPT4 competitor. With an emphasis on multimodality, they’ve released 3 versions; Ultra, to use with large data sets, Pro, as a ChatGPT3.5 competitor, and Nano for mobile devices. Of course there’s already much back and forth regarding superiority, but some of the only practical demos we’ve found seem to lean ChatGPT. We’re very excited to see how it all unfolds.

Join us this week as we dive into the latest news around OpenAI and Microsoft. Sam Altman, former CEO and figurehead of OpenAI, was fired end of day Friday, November 17th. Apart from a rather cryptic statement from the OpenAI board, there’s no confirmation and much conjecture as to what precipitated this decision. Greg Brockman, previous director of the board, was demoted and quit shortly thereafter. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, with significant investments in OpenAI, called for a board meeting over the weekend, already spurring talk of bringing Altman back as CEO of OpenAI. Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s Chief Scientist and one of the names on the board’s initial statement to remove Altman, was quick to backtrack and embrace the momentum shift. Interestingly, roughly 700 out of 770 employees within OpenAI agreed they would leave the company if Altman isn’t brought back. Perhaps a reminder that despite the incredible AI advancements, those behind it aren't impervious to the drama. We explore some possibilities that could spur such turmoil, but the good news is the API is still up, so take advantage of the chaos and build!

We begin this week discussing several Microsoft announcements from their annual Ignite conference, primarily around Co-Piot, the latest Bing chat. You can now access Co-Pilot (a ChatGPT+ equivalent with Bing browsing capabilities) in Bing, Chrome, and Safari browsers, and MSFT is aiming to include Co-Pilot in it’s full suite of products. Next we explore some interesting ChatGPT+ news and their indefinite pause of new Plus user signups. Not bad for the fastest growing user app in history, and not without exciting implications around an expanding user base. After delving into the Humane AI Pin including its OpenAI-driven backend and futuristic feel, we explore the newest ChatGPT knowledge cutoff of April 2023. ChatGPT now has knowledge of itself, that it exists, that it’s in production, of its own history and documentation, and can talk to all of it. We wrap up looking forward to some more interesting AI use cases, unpack an interesting InfoSec newsletter, and finish with an interesting thought - that all this came from trying to guess the next word in the earliest stages of LLM development.

This week we discuss the many announcements coming out of OpenAI’s DevDay, held November 6th. We begin exploring GPT’s, customizable versions of ChatGPT that can be created around specific use cases and shared, no coding skills required. You can build and share today, but later this month OpenAI will roll out the GPT Store where builders can monetize on their creations. OpenAI hasn’t specified as to possible revenue share, but with their $100M a week in revenue, it seems promising. Next we touch on the new ChatGPT 4 Turbo version and it’s improvements over the 4 engine, explore new API capabilities, and share some laughs over the brief chaos that ensued as OpenAI briefly sunsetted PlugIn operability. Join us next week after MSFT takes the stage with their annual Ignite conference. No doubt lots of interesting things to come.

Welcome to episode 30!
We kick off with some recent news from POTUS’s office. An executive order was issued 10/30, ensuring America takes advantage of AI while mitigating the associated risks. Though they attempted to source feedback prior to issuance, we’re doubtful this ink on paper play will have much purchase across the industry, particularly with the rapid growth across the industry.
We briefly touch on some rather comical misuses of the tech in the legal field, and continue on to OpenAI’s DevDay, a conference to be held this coming Tuesday, 11/6. They’re keeping much behind closed doors but are promising some grand announcements, and we’re not shy in speculating what might be revealed…
Charles shares a bit about Reid Hoffaman’s (a co-founder of OpenAI) new book, ‘Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI,’ which was written with ChatGPT 4. Exploring creativity, humor, and more, we recommend this quick read.
We wrap up with Apple’s new computer release with M3 chips, demonstrating significant optimizations in the GPU stack. Up to 2.5x faster processing, the many implications for AI models continue to expand.

Once again we continue to delve into what we see as the pervasive misunderstandings of the technology. If you have a desired output, ChatGPT+ is there to help. Develop an app, become a data analyst, explore it, ask some questions, go try it out and have some fun. 

Lastly we examine some fears of AI. Will it take your job? Take over the human race? We doubt it, but maybe we'll see some indentured AI servants, robocops, or even some robofriends soon enough...

The use cases are unfolding almost as rapidly as the tech, and our hats are off to the OpenAI team, what they’re shipping, and how fast they’re doing it all.

We then explore some interesting news around a potential OpenAI x Jony Ives collaboration. As the designer of some of the most prolific technology of our time (think iMac, iPod, iPhone, Apple Watch and more), there’s talk of some sort of physical AI entity to have on person. Exciting stuff.

Lastly, we cover Starlink’s cellular network to come, chat a bit about the man behind it all, and explore the double sided coin that is Twitter (X). We wrap up, inevitably, with just how darn useful AI tools really are. Realize massive efficiency gains with just a bit of learning how to interact with it. Stay curious.
