Outside of the Kingdom of God, Jesus taught more about money than any other single topic! He made it a priority because he knew a person’s heart is where his or her treasure is.

Jesus said, when we store up treasures in this world that are vulnerable, we will rust and corrode over with time. When we store up treasures in heaven, we will receive rewards that lasts for all of eternity.

The only way we can break the chains of greed is through giving generously. It’s liberating to live like we believe Jesus knew what he was talking about when he said, “It’s more blessed to give than to receive.”

Our natural inclination is to manage the outward symptoms of sin in our lives by managing our behaviors. Jesus teaches that sin must be dealt with from the inside out and not from the outside in.

There are a number of interpretations of the meaning of the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10. Some think the story states contemplation is superior to task orientation. Some think “type B” personalities are judged as better than “type A.”

What Jesus indicates, however, is the idea of “the one thing.” The one thing can be defined as time spent listening to God’s Word. Or the one thing can be defined as taking action on what God’s Word says. The one thing is different things at different times to different people.

We need to listen to what the Holy Spirit says the one thing is to us. Some of us need to recommit our lives to be about one thing — hear God’s Word and put it into practice.
