Boardsi Leadership Talks episodes

  • What if the biggest obstacle to your company's success is YOU?

It's a difficult question. But it's one that every leader should be willing to ask.

In my latest episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, I sit down with Dr. Ron Stotts, executive coach, three-time bestselling author, and a leadership transformation expert with more than five decades of experience.

Our conversation challenges a common assumption in business:

That better leadership comes primarily from learning more strategies, acquiring new skills, or improving operational processes.

    Ron offers a different perspective.

He believes that the most significant leadership breakthroughs begin with self-awareness and personal transformation.

We explore why successful executives experience burnout, how ego can silently damage organizational culture, and why vulnerability may be one of the most underestimated strengths in leadership.

We also discuss how the personal limitations leaders carry into their organizations can influence everything from employee engagement to long-term business performance.

    One of my biggest takeaways?

You cannot expect your organization to evolve if you're unwilling to evolve as its leader.

Leadership is a continuous journey of growth, accountability, and becoming the kind of person others can trust and follow.

I'd love to hear from fellow CEOs, founders, and executives:

Do you believe leadership challenges are primarily external, or do they begin with the leader?

  • Stop Leading Like Everyone Else! Build Around Your Strengths | Jonathan Domsky

Stop Leading Like Everyone Else! Build Around Your Strengths | Jonathan Domsky

What if the secret to becoming a better leader isn't changing who you are, but building a business around how you naturally think?

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks | Conversations with Visionaries, host Martin Rowinski welcomes Jonathan Domsky, founder of Untangled Coaching, executive coach, and host of the Pattern Seeking Entrepreneur Podcast.

After more than two decades of entrepreneurship, Jonathan discovered that the leadership approaches that helped him build successful businesses weren't always the same approaches his growing organizations needed.

Instead of forcing himself into traditional leadership models, he learned to redesign his environment, develop complementary teams, and create systems that allowed everyone to operate at their best.

Jonathan also shares his personal journey of discovering he is autistic later in life and how understanding his natural thinking patterns helped him become a more intentional and effective leader.

    In this conversation, you'll discover:

    • Why successful entrepreneurs sometimes lose their passion as their companies grow
    • How to recognize when you've reached a leadership inflection point
    • Why neurodivergent thinking can create unique entrepreneurial strengths
    • The difference between your Zone of Genius and your Zone of Excellence
    • How to build teams that complement your strengths instead of trying to do everything yourself
    • Why every leader should consider creating a "Working With Me" guide
    • How employee frustrations can reveal opportunities for operational improvement
    • Why confidence, curiosity, and self-awareness are essential leadership qualities

💡 Key Takeaway: You don't need to be a well-rounded leader. You need to build a well-rounded team.

Whether you're a founder, CEO, executive, or entrepreneur navigating the challenges of growth, this conversation offers a different perspective on leadership, productivity, and building a business that supports your strengths.

  • Why Successful Leaders Still Struggle With Confidence | Katherine Flechaus

Why do successful executives still struggle with self-doubt, perfectionism, and confidence, even after years of achievement?

The answer may have less to do with their abilities and more to do with the beliefs they've carried throughout their lives.

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, host Martin Rowinski sits down with Katherine Flechaus, founder of Align Core Life Coaching, licensed clinical social worker, and leadership coach with more than 30 years of experience in behavioral health and leadership development.

Katherine shares why confidence isn't something leaders can simply develop through positive thinking or motivational techniques. Lasting change begins by understanding the underlying beliefs that influence how we think, communicate, make decisions, and lead.

Drawing on her experience in high-pressure healthcare and mental health environments, Katherine explains how effective leaders develop confident teams, empower others to make decisions, and create environments where people can succeed without constant supervision.

    In this episode, we explore:

Why accomplished executives still experience self-doubt

The hidden beliefs that undermine leadership confidence

    What executive presence really means

How perfectionism and people-pleasing affect high achievers

Why realistic expectations matter more than perfection

How active listening strengthens leadership and communication

Why resilient leaders separate their identity from their job title

What makes someone an effective board advisor

The importance of authentic leadership for women executives

Why emotional intelligence becomes more important as AI advances

How to use AI without losing the human element of leadership

Why strong leaders empower their teams to make decisions

The importance of mentorship and owning your mistakes

How asking yourself "why" can reveal the beliefs driving your reactions

One of Katherine's most important messages:

Before trying to change your behavior, understand the belief driving it.

Because real leadership growth doesn't begin with appearing more confident. It begins with understanding yourself.

Whether you're a CEO, entrepreneur, executive, board member, or emerging leader, this conversation offers practical insights into building confidence, improving communication, and developing a more authentic leadership style.

  • From Wall Street to the Boardroom: Leadership, M&A & Building Your Brand | Deborah Smith

What separates a successful executive from someone who becomes a trusted advisor, CEO, or corporate board member?

For Deborah Smith, much of it comes down to confidence, judgment, expertise, relationships, and the willingness to ask questions others aren't asking.

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, Martin Rowinski sits down with Deborah Smith, co-founder and CEO of The CenterCap Group, a boutique investment bank specializing in the real assets sector, and a public company board director.

Deborah's career has taken her from growing up on a dairy farm in Australia to leadership roles across major financial institutions, entrepreneurship, investment banking, M&A, and corporate governance.

She shares how taking responsibility at an early age shaped her leadership philosophy, why she relies heavily on what she calls “informed experience,” and what she has learned advising companies through some of their most consequential decisions.

Martin and Deborah also discuss what executives need to understand if they want to earn a corporate board seat.

    Her message is especially relevant:

Being qualified isn't enough. People need to know what you're qualified to do.

Deborah explains why executives need to understand their expertise, develop their professional brand, build their network, and make it known that board service is part of their next chapter.

    The conversation also explores:

    • What it takes to leave a major institution and build your own company
     • Why Deborah would not start a business without the right partner
     • How intuition evolves into informed experience
     • How trusted advisors build credibility during high-stakes decisions
     • What makes someone genuinely valuable in the boardroom
     • Why aspiring board members need to become known for something
     • The connection between executive branding and board opportunities
     • Why your network remains one of your most valuable career assets
     • How AI and changing information flows are affecting corporate governance
     • What founders get wrong when selling their companies
     • Why M&A success requires more than simply getting the deal done
     • What investors look for in management teams
     • Why previous mistakes can actually make executives stronger
     • The role sales and storytelling play in raising capital
     • Why patience may be one of leadership's most underrated skills

Deborah also shares the personal habit that helps her decompress and generate some of her best ideas, the mentors who saw her potential before she saw it herself, and the one word she believes defines great leadership:

    Confidence.

If you're an executive, entrepreneur, founder, investor, or aspiring board member, this conversation offers a practical look at what it takes to build credibility, make better decisions, and create lasting professional value.

  • The Future of Work: AI Should Reduce Friction, Not Replace Humans | Michael Eskenasy

What if the biggest productivity problem inside your company isn't your people, but the way work is coordinated?

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, host Martin Rowinski sits down with Michael Eskenasy, founder and architect of Chefrey OS, to explore cognitive overload, AI, coordination, trust, leadership, and the future of work.

Michael's career has taken him through complex technology environments including Disney, Amazon, Twilio, TruePill, and Beyond. Across those experiences, he kept seeing the same fundamental problem:

People were becoming the integration layer between disconnected systems.

Employees move information from one platform to another. They attend meetings to understand decisions made in other meetings. They reconstruct context from emails, CRM notes, project-management systems, conversations, and calendars.

Then organizations call it an efficiency problem.

Michael believes it's something deeper: a coordination problem.

In this conversation, Martin and Michael explore:

    • Why employees don't necessarily need another productivity tool
    • How fragmented technology increases cognitive load
    • Why context gets lost as decisions move through organizations
    • The hidden cost of meetings and constant context switching
    • Why employees have become the integration layer between software platforms
    • How better coordination could reduce organizational friction
    • The difference between efficiency and cognitive load
    • Why highly talented employees can struggle inside poorly designed systems
    • How leadership decisions lose context as they travel through an organization
    • Why execution problems aren't always people problems
    • How organizational culture can become disconnected from individual purpose
    • What Michael learned at Disney, Amazon, and Twilio
    • How Chefrey OS grew from his earlier Dragonfly concept
    • Why trust is critical to the future of workplace technology
    • Why Michael believes AI should support human decision-making rather than replace it
    • How AI could remove administrative work while allowing people to focus on craft, specialization, relationships, and judgment
    • Why future leaders need to understand the emotional and cognitive realities of their people
    • Why work simply doesn't have to be this hard

One of Michael's most provocative arguments is that we may be thinking about AI incorrectly.

    Rather than asking:

“How much human work can AI replace?”

    perhaps leaders should be asking:

“How much unnecessary work can AI remove so humans can do their best work?”

Michael describes AI as a kind of advanced calculator. Its greatest value, in his view, isn't making every decision for us. It's processing information and coordination so people can make better decisions themselves.

That distinction becomes increasingly important as organizations race to automate.

If technology eliminates administrative friction, preserves context, and helps people focus on what they're uniquely good at, AI can enhance human capability.

But if technology simply adds another system employees have to manage, organizations may be increasing the very problem they're trying to solve.

For CEOs, board members, technology leaders, founders, executives, and anyone thinking seriously about AI and the future of work, this conversation challenges a fundamental assumption about productivity:

Maybe the answer isn't asking people to work harder or adding another tool. Maybe it's designing work so people have less unnecessary work to do.

  • People Before Numbers: The Behavioral Science of High-Performing Teams | Leon Morales

What if the biggest obstacle to better business performance isn't your strategy, technology, or numbers, but human behavior?

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, host Martin Rowinski sits down with Leon Morales, President and Chief Energy Officer at DNA Behavior International, to explore the behavioral forces behind leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and organizational performance.

    Leon's philosophy is simple:
    People before numbers.

Before joining DNA Behavior, Leon spent 17 years at Cox Communications, building experience across finance, technology, operations, and leadership. His career also includes service in the U.S. Air Force and an early chapter with Blockbuster Video.

That combination of experiences ultimately led Leon to focus on something that influences virtually every business outcome: human behavior.

Martin and Leon discuss why successful leaders can become so focused on results that they overlook relationships, how behavioral differences create friction inside organizations, and why understanding how people naturally communicate and operate can unlock significantly better performance.

    They explore:
    • Why organizations should think people before numbers
    • The behavioral blind spots leaders often don't recognize
    • Why results-focused leaders can unintentionally create disengagement
    • The role of psychological safety in high-performing organizations
    • Why behavioral diversity matters
    • How different personality and behavioral styles can complement each other
    • Why great communicators aren't necessarily great project managers
    • How putting people in the wrong roles can set them up for failure
    • Why leaders frequently misinterpret performance problems
    • The danger of giving feedback without understanding how someone receives it
    • How remote and virtual work have changed workplace communication
    • Why employees sometimes leave without leadership understanding the real reason
    • How behavioral intelligence can be integrated into technology
    • What Blockbuster can teach leaders about becoming anchored to past success
    • Why yesterday's winning strategy may not produce tomorrow's growth
    • The importance of innovation and adaptability
    • Why leaders need to “get up on the balcony” and look at what's happening across the organization
    • How strengths-based organizations can increase employee satisfaction and performance
    • Why behavioral development shouldn't stop with the executive team
    • Why leaders must understand and own their own behavior

One of the most important ideas from the conversation is that behavioral diversity can be an organizational advantage when leaders understand how to use it.

A fast-moving strategist and a relationship-oriented community builder may approach the same problem completely differently. That difference can create friction, or it can create balance.

The difference often comes down to leadership.

Leon argues that when employees understand their own behavior and the behavior of the people around them, communication improves, roles become clearer, and teams can begin working from their strengths rather than fighting against their differences.

Understand the people behind the numbers, and the numbers may begin to change.

  • Your People Aren’t the Problem. Your System Might Be. | Dustin Snyder

What if your workforce problem isn’t actually a people problem?

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, host Martin Rowinski sits down with Dustin Snyder, founder of Way Forward and creator of Strategic Workforce Insight Mapping (SWIM), a methodology designed to help organizations identify the root causes behind turnover, disengagement, absenteeism, and persistent underperformance.

    Dustin’s core philosophy is straightforward:

If you change the conditions, you change the behavior.

Too often, companies respond to workforce problems by replacing people, tightening policies, restructuring teams, or implementing another leadership initiative.

But what happens when a company replaces three or four people in the same role—and keeps getting the same result?

Dustin argues that leaders may be treating the symptom while leaving the system that created it completely untouched.

In this conversation, Martin and Dustin explore:

    • Why leaders instinctively blame people instead of systems
    • How workplace conditions shape employee behavior
    • Why replacing an employee often fails to solve the underlying problem
    • The concept of situational strength and how environments drive behavior
    • Why leaders rush to solutions before diagnosing root causes
    • How Dustin’s background in labor relations and arbitration shaped his evidence-first approach
    • What Dustin learned after confronting absenteeism inside his own manufacturing operation
    • Why stricter attendance policies can sometimes make the underlying problem worse
    • What the SWIM methodology is and how it works
    • How organizations can uncover invisible workforce conditions
    • Why frontline employees often hold critical insight executives never see
    • The danger of leadership assumptions
    • How communication breakdowns and internal silos create workforce dysfunction
    • Why small structural changes can sometimes solve problems that have existed for years
    • Why control-oriented leadership can reduce buy-in
    • How involving employees in decisions improves ownership and implementation
    • The systems-thinking philosophy behind Dustin’s book, Sink or SWIM
    • Why leaders should think about human systems with the same rigor they apply to operational systems
    • How AI is changing organizational diagnostics
    • Why every employee headcount may increasingly need to justify its ROI
    • How Dustin plans to scale SWIM through certification and licensing
    • Why boards may eventually treat workforce diagnostics like financial or legal due diligence

One of the most important questions Dustin encourages leaders to ask is:

“If this behavior were rational, why would it be occurring?”

That question changes the leadership conversation.

    Instead of immediately asking:

    “What’s wrong with this employee?”

    leaders begin asking:

“What conditions are making this behavior the logical response?”

And that shift can fundamentally change how organizations approach performance, culture, turnover, and workforce strategy.

If you’re a CEO, board member, HR leader, operations executive, entrepreneur, or anyone responsible for organizational performance, this episode offers a different way to think about persistent workforce problems.

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, Martin Rowinski sits down with Neal Goyal, a go-to-market leader with extensive experience scaling growth and sales across the e-commerce and SaaS ecosystem.

Having helped companies including PostPilot, Disco, and TapCart grow pipeline and revenue, Neal has developed a very different perspective on the future of outbound sales.

His philosophy starts with something surprisingly simple:

    Relationships before outreach.

Neal shares how LinkedIn became one of the most powerful tools in his GTM strategy, with approximately 82% of the $40 million in revenue he says he has closed over the past six years originating through LinkedIn.

But his strategy isn't simply about posting more content.

It's about what Neal calls social-led outbound, where salespeople engage with prospects, contribute to conversations, build credibility, develop relationships, and earn attention before asking for the meeting.

Martin and Neal also explore the rapidly changing role of AI in sales.

While AI can dramatically improve workflows and make top performers more productive, Neal argues that leaders are making a serious mistake when they assume technology can replace the human relationships behind successful selling.

AI can increase efficiency. It can't shake your customer's hand.

    In this conversation, you'll discover:

    • Why Neal believes traditional cold email is losing effectiveness
    • How social-led outbound changes the traditional sales process
    • Why LinkedIn has become central to Neal's GTM strategy
    • How salespeople can build trust before sending a connection request
    • Why AI should improve sales efficiency rather than replace relationships
    • What separates high-performing GTM teams from average ones
    • Why salespeople should create their own content
    • How personal branding can become a salesperson's competitive advantage
    • Why your audience and reputation are portable throughout your career
    • Neal's prediction about the rise of the million-dollar seller
    • What he looks for when hiring GTM talent
    • Why LinkedIn activity can reveal something about a salesperson's ability to build relationships
    • How sales professionals should respond when they lose momentum
    • Why founders should help employees build their personal brands
    • Where outbound sales and revenue generation are heading next

    The tools are changing.

    The channels are changing.

    AI is changing.

    But one fundamental principle remains:

People buy from people they trust.

If you're a founder, CEO, sales leader, GTM executive, entrepreneur, or anyone responsible for generating revenue, this conversation offers a compelling look at where modern selling is heading.

  • The Future of Manufacturing: Leadership, Storytelling & Skilled Trades | Tony Gunn

What does the future of manufacturing really depend on?

Technology matters. Automation matters. AI matters. But according to Tony Gunn, the people behind the machines still matter most.

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, host Martin Rowinski sits down with Tony Gunn, CEO of TGM Global Services, Director of Global Operations at MTDCNC, host of The Gunn Show, and Amazon bestselling author.

After traveling to more than 80 countries and spending his career inside the global manufacturing industry, Tony brings a unique perspective on leadership, workforce development, storytelling, skilled trades, and the future of manufacturing.

Tony explains why manufacturing remains an “invisible industry” despite being fundamental to nearly every modern economy—and why changing the way we tell its story could be critical to attracting the next generation of talent.

    Martin and Tony discuss:

🔹 How traveling to 80+ countries changed Tony's approach to leadership
🔹 Leadership differences across global manufacturing markets
🔹 Why apprenticeship programs can transform workforce development
🔹 What Switzerland is doing differently to introduce young people to careers
🔹 Why manufacturing and skilled trades have an image problem
🔹 The ROI of skilled trades versus traditional university pathways
🔹 How manufacturers can humanize their brands through storytelling
🔹 Why video has become such a powerful communication tool
🔹 How leaders can connect five generations in today's workforce
🔹 Why authenticity matters more than chasing social media trends
🔹 How manufacturing companies can make technical content interesting
🔹 The one leadership skill Tony believes every executive needs: listening
🔹 Why leaders should surround themselves with people smarter than themselves
🔹 How failure became one of Tony's greatest teachers
🔹 Why growth rarely happens inside the comfort zone
🔹 Tony's bestselling book, A Journey of Riches: Building Your Dreams
🔹 The evolution of The Gunn Show and Tony's vision for the manufacturing community

One of Tony's strongest leadership lessons is also one of the simplest:

    Listen.

Not listening while waiting for your opportunity to respond—but genuinely listening to the people around you, recognizing what they know that you don't, and creating an environment where their expertise can contribute to better decisions.

Tony also shares why failure has been instrumental in his journey—from setbacks in college and soccer to ultimately finding his way into a machine shop and building an international career around an industry he believes deserves far greater visibility.

Whether you're a CEO, manufacturing executive, board member, entrepreneur, skilled-trades professional, or emerging leader, this conversation offers a different perspective on what it takes to lead people, build industries, and tell stories that matter.

  • The Future of Leadership in the Age of AI | AJ Thomas | Boardsi Leadership Talks

Why the Best Leaders Don't Have All the Answers
AI, Innovation & the Future of Leadership
How Great Leaders Turn Curiosity Into Innovation
Making Good Trouble: Leadership, AI & Innovation
What Google X Taught AJ Thomas About Leadership & Innovation

What does leadership look like when AI, creativity, technology, and human potential are evolving simultaneously?

In this episode of Boardsi Leadership Talks, host Martin Rowinski sits down with AJ Thomas, visionary leader, investor, futurist, founder and general partner at Good Trouble Ventures, and CEO of the Troublemaker Lab.

AJ's career has taken her from leadership at Google's X, the Moonshot Factory, to coaching entrepreneurs, investing in emerging technologies, advising organizations, teaching executive leadership, and even writing award-winning children's books.

Throughout the conversation, AJ challenges some of the conventional assumptions we make about leadership.

Great leaders don't always have the answer.

Innovation doesn't always mean continuing what you've started.

Structure doesn't have to kill creativity.

And AI won't eliminate the need for humans—it may make the human side of leadership even more important.

    In this episode:

    • Why intellectual honesty is one of the most important qualities of great leaders
    • Why saying "I don't know" can be a leadership strength
    • How curiosity helps leaders challenge conventional thinking
    • What "making good trouble" means in business and leadership
    • Why personal breakthroughs often precede professional breakthroughs
    • How mission, vision, and values become a leader's operating system
    • Why organizations need to put the human back into the AI loop
    • How AI is moving from experimentation toward real business application
    • What leaders should understand about AI, talent, and organizational culture
    • Leadership lessons AJ learned at Google's X, the Moonshot Factory
    • Why knowing when to kill an idea can be as important as knowing when to pursue one
    • How constraints can actually increase creativity
    • What marginalized communities can teach businesses about innovation
    • Why courage and curiosity belong in the boardroom
    • How children's books can teach lessons that apply to executives
    • Why leadership legacy should extend far beyond a job title

One of AJ's most powerful observations is simple:

You can be deeply committed to an idea while remaining open to the possibility that you're wrong.

That's where curiosity becomes a leadership advantage.

As AI accelerates change across organizations, the leaders who succeed won't necessarily be those with all the answers. They'll be the ones willing to ask better questions, challenge assumptions, stay intellectually honest, and keep the human element at the center of transformation.

And when it comes to legacy, AJ offers leaders an interesting challenge:

Can you describe your purpose in just six words?
