Cruising in the tropics can be a pretty sticky experience if you don’t have cooler air circulating throughout your boat. Air conditioning’s great if you’re plugged into shore power but what about those cruisers who prefer to swing on the hook? Carolyn Shearlock has spent many years living aboard boats in the warmer latitudes. Here she shares her tips and tricks for beating the heat.
Linus Wilson’s a great guy and a recent convert to the world of sailing. Despite his laid back and pretty laconic style, Linus is hugely enthusiastic about cruising – so much so that he has written three books on the subject. He also maintains a blog with regular video updates and he’s not shy about voicing his sometimes controversial opinions. Usually he is the interviewer rather than the interviewee, but here Linus has the tables turned on him.
His latest book, released yesterday (November 21st), is FREE today and only $0.99 tomorrow. The reviewers have been very positive. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MFFX9AG/

Paula and Damian took over Ca’n Topa back in February and have not looked back. They came to Mallorca looking for a holiday home and ended up buying a lifestyle business, almost on a whim, and without even seeing the nearby little city of Sóller way down in the valley below them. They spoke to Shirley Roberts about mountain life, home-made cakes, fat Austrians and the high cost of feline emigration.
The rise of the Mycenaean galley, a style of ship characterized by oared propulsion and a long, narrow hull built for speed and power rather than for transport. Depictions are numerous. Here Brandon Huebner focuses on a few main items from around the Mycenaean world. He also discusses the 'Aegean List' of Amenhotep III, a list of foreign cities in the Aegean, cities which one professor believes were visited by the New Kingdom Egyptians. Finally, Brandon looks at a Mycenaean galley model found in a tomb in Gurob Egypt, making connections between the style in which it was decorated and the Homeric references to Achaean galleys during the Trojan War. This episode is filled to the brim with great info, so don't miss out!
The galley is something you can’t easily change, so it’s important you find a boat with the right galley for you. Is the layout practical? Is it safe? Is there plenty of room for your equipment and provisions? In this latest edition of The Boat Galley, Carolyn Shearlock takes you through the process of assessing your vessel’s cooking area.
A look ahead to this year’s ‘deck the docks’ cruises on the Lake of the Ozarks. Plus, Charles Fort from Boat US on how to protect your vessel from theft during the winter months.
Linnet’s story is quite remarkable. She spent her childhood moving from country to country as the daughter of a British spy-catcher. She trained as a dairy farmer, she worked as a traditional fisherwoman in Spain, she made a good living in London as a singer and songwriter and she ran an upmarket restaurant on the island of Mallorca.
