Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi
It's poetic, but disturbing and I had to put it down several times. It's looking at mental health through a spiritual lens, with both traditional Nigerian and Christian influences. It might be interesting to mention in that conversation books like The Yearning by Mohale Mashigo, or Lidudumalingani's short story Memories We Lost, or Unathi Magubeni's novel Nwelezelanga and Chigozie Obioma's Orchestra of Minorities (which we talked about before) for other examples of how African writers are increasingly working with subject matter around both spirituality and mental health.
