  • Valley of Baca (Remastered)
Repentance prepares the highway for people to come into the presence of the Lord. They need substance and direction for life; not only repentance, but regeneration. From where does such a thing come? In this sermon on Psalm 84:5–7 titled "The Valley of Bacca," Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones looks at Christ as the source of encouragement for the believer, despite the circumstances he or she might find themselves in. The result of such a faith is a clear view of life as a whole, and of self in relation to God. Are the pains of life the result of others' faults or one's own sin? Find purpose and direction for life, rather than living in a state of selfish chaos. God withholds nothing good from those who walk uprightly. Does one have a road to follow when calamity and trials come? It is in this valley of Bacca, one of tears and sorrow, that this psalmist's joy springs to life. Learn to rejoice, even in the valley of Bacca. Let troubles make the Christian consider the goodness of God and cause rejoicing; praise Him, He has overcome the world!

  • The Deceitfulness of Sin (sermon 2130)
Spurgeon hates sin, and rightly so. It is, in part, a reflection of his love to Christ, and his love to Christ only increases as he considers the sinfulness of sin. This is a profoundly insightful sermon, with shades of John Owen's books on temptation and the mortification of sin, a sort of anatomy of sin, at least in the way that it tries to draw us into darkness and wickedness. So first we think about the way in which sin deceives, given that its very nature is to assault the truth of God and the God of truth. Spurgeon spends a large proportion of the sermon telling us the kinds of lies which sin whispers in our ears and to our hearts. If we have never thought about this, then the sermon will shock us and teach us. Then we think about the way in which this deceit tends to harden the heart, and again we are in the realm of spiritual experience, and the gradual coarsening of the conscience, the increasing carelessness with regard to conduct, that comes when we listen to sin's lying tongue and begin to act accordingly. Finally, branching out a little from the text, we are urged to fight against deceiving sin by faith, by confession, by tenderness of heart, and by exhorting one another daily—and that means a willingness both to receive and to give appropriate exhortation. We are not a pack of barking dogs, nipping at each other constantly and unkindly, but we are to look out for each other, both as we commit sins and omit duties. Loaded with pastoral wisdom, here is an outstanding reminder of our susceptibility to sin, and our need to be on guard against it.

  • The Church at Sardis Rev. 3:1-6 Pt. 2
In Part 2 we see that the Lord gives 3 unique promises to those believers of Sardis and to all true believers that will follow in history. These promises are for His Bride, true believers saved from Acts 2, Pentecost, to the catching up of the church at the Rapture. He promises: She is to be clothed in white garments of righteousness. She will "not never" be blotted out of the Book of Life, eternally His Bride. The Lord will acknowledge her as His eternal Bride before the Father. 0:00 A Charles Schulz "Young Pillars" cartoon 3:55 Three Promises to the Bride - Rev. 3:5 11:35 The 2nd Promise to the Bride - Rev. 3:5b 24:07 The 3rd Promise to the Bride - Rev. 3:5c
