Two interviews with Richard Powers, one of America’s most distinguished novelists. In 2006, his novel The Echo Maker, won the National Book Award and was a finmalist for the Pulitzer, and his most recent novel, The Overstory, was short-listed for the Booker Prize and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Richard Powers explores the effects of modern science and technology in his twelve novels. Along with the Pulitzer and National Book Award, he has won many other awards over the course of his career, including a MacArthur Fellowship. Richard Powers has taught at the University of Illinois and Stanford Universities.
An interview recorded during the book tour for “The Time of Our Singing,” recorded in the KPFA studios, February 15, 2003.
In 2003, his novel The Time of Our Singing was published to excellent reviews. A multi-generational epic of the civil rights movement, the book combined his love of physics and music, and took his writing to a new level, becoming a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and winning two other major literary awards.

Richard Powers delves into the world of eco-terrorism and the secret life of trees in this epic story about eight individuals who, together and apart, come to see the forests of earth as our salvation, and the salvation of the planet. Based on prodigious research, Powers tells of the way trees communicate with one another, and spins stories based on real life confrontations between protestors and those who would destroy the lifeblood of the planet to pay off leveraged debt.
