S1E12 - How to Help others help themselves
Are there times when you getting that knock on your office door asking for help, emails that are obviously someone pushing their issues down to you or a compulsive “I dunno’er” in your life? Here are 5 ways you can help others, help themselves!
The 5 ways people can help themselves:
Be available as a consultant but not as a worker
Cultivate the coaching aura
Learn to say “no” and if they pull rank, make it known you’re going above and beyond while the other person is not.
Help create a checklist with the person and tell them “good luck”
The Ben Franklin method of selling in action
WIIFM - What’s in it for me?
Have a clear distinction of what you do in your workplace
Visibility of your work, makes you harder to dump stuff on
Be unavailable during your power hour
Build a reputation for being quick and decisive with feedback
Cultivate a bit of a wall and ensure people don’t think you’re a jerk, just to not waste your time.
Friendly but firm attitude
If you’re forced to do their work, DOCUMENT IT ALL and help get rid of them!
If I am better than you and can document your job functions easily, then I’ll be recommending a change in duty to management on your behalf.
Never give work to the lazy smart person, or it’s going to be automated.
Are some of these points mean? Nope… You have to cut out the time suckers and move yourself into the driver's seat of your life. Doesn’t matter who it is, you manage your own time and others need to respect that.
