This is a 2-hour block of music programming I produced for WCLM 1450 AM in Richmond, Virginia at 10PM on Friday June 30, 2017. The first hour is the Bopst Show and the second is Good To Your Earhole by DJ Greybeard (Charles is still involved with music as a programming committee member of the Richmond Folk Festival as well as hosting his long-running shows on WRIR, "The Motherland Influence" and, "The Other Black Music")

This was an early attempt to fill the 10PM-6AM slot for station when nobody was in the building on the corner of 32nd and Hull Street. It repeated 4 times before the morning shift arrived at 6AM. I eventually programmed no-repeat, 8-hours blocks (you can check out those shows here and here) after listeners called in to complain about the repetition. We were kind of surprised by that, but were happy that people listened to the station all night long. It's the type of complaint radio station's like to have.

As was true then as it is now, I hope you enjoy the shows.

Like my previous post of WCLM 1450 AM programing, I put together this overnight programming to come on after Sweet Lou's, "Latin Jazz & Salsa Show" (check out his radio station here).. After he signed off at 10PM, all he had to do was hit the play button on the station's computer to keep the music programming going until 6AM. There was no need to sequence, shows, drops, spots, PSAs, or commercials; I had mixed all that together in this one file. This spared Preston Brown, the station's forever hustling manager, from the tedious task of sequencing individual files to play until the morning when the station went live again. It also allowed me to sequence and pace commercial blocks (which I spent an inordinate amount of time putting together) and programming seamlessly as the computer program we used would sometime freeze up if there were too many individual files running back-to-back.

This block of programming has 4 hours of the Bopst Show with 2 hours of Rat Ward Radio sandwiched in between. Rounding out the 8-hour block is, Good to Your Earhole, a show hosted by music enthusiast and former bass player for Richmond legends the Good Guys, Charles "Graybeard" Williams. He named his show after the Funkadelic song, and he plays a variety of black music from different eras and genres. Charles is still involved with music as a programming committee member of the Richmond Folk Festival as well as hosting his long-running shows on WRIR, "The Motherland Influence" and, "The Other Black Music". At the time, I was pushing Preston hard to give him more airtime, but, as things usually happen in the radio business, the station was sold acrimoniously before we could make that happen. The new owner revamped the format and got rid of everybody that had been part of WCLM. 

Of well, it was fun while it lasted.

This is an 8-hour block of music programming I produced for the 10PM-6AM slot on WCLM 1450 AM in Richmond, Virginia for Friday September 8, 2017. The station manager, Preston Brown, wanted to fill the overnight slot with programming and he gave me complete autonomy to choose the music and DJs for this broadcast. I asked two Richmond musicians I knew to make shows for this block of programming. Hosted by local deviant, noise-making advocate, and sound obsessive Gary Stevens, Rat Ward Radio is dedicated to rare, underground, and forgotten music, with a focus on DIY obscurities, home tapers, hidden gems, and private press releases. The Hustle Season, hosted by longtime Richmond musician Kelli Strawbridge, is a survey of funk, soul, jazz, and disco told and mixed from a player’s perspective. Along with my show, I wanted this block of programming to showcase the diversity of the city’s music selectors unified by each of our passion for audio expression in its myriad of forms and guises. I must forever thank Preston Brown for allowing me to be myself on the Richmond airwaves over the years as his stewardship and the importance of the only non-segregated, commercial radio station in this former capital of the confederacy cannot be overstated. While low power radio stations such as Richmond’s own WRIR 97. 3 carries on the tradition of great American FM radio freeform music programming, WCLM reached audiences and represented communities that tied the diverse fabric of Richmond, Virginia together long before low power community radio stations were in existence.  I am forever grateful and honored to be part of the station's history.
