Remember. . . The Blair Witch? ‘Member. . . Bridget Jones? ‘Member. . . Oliver Stone? Yes, this week we’ve got Bridget Jones’s Baby, Blair Witch, and Snowden. If any of those movies sound interesting to you, you are probably going to like them. If you don’t like rom-coms, horror, or paranoid real-life techno-thrillers, respectively, you probably won’t.

Bridget Jones’s Baby gives the core audience exactly what it wants, but doesn’t tread a ton of new ground. Still, very funny, and Ed Sheeran shows up. Andy give is 6/10 and has a more full review here.
Blair Witch makes Adam want to go camping even less. They’ve taken the first movie to its next level. Adam was scared and had a great time, giving it an 8/10 and a more full review here.
Snowden is complicated but ultimately boring. Amazing acting, but Stone is all over the place as director. It’s both paranoid and naive at the same time. Andy give is 6/10 and has a more full review here. Congratulations– after reading and listening to this, you’re probably on a government watchlist.
Only one movie this week– Sully by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart. It’s one of Eastwood’s best and one of Hanks’s best too. Andy was worried it was going to be American Sniper Clint Eastwood who yells at empty chairs, but instead we got Unforgiven / Mystic River Clint Eastwood who is a great director.

Also, if you are interested in the Snowden screening we mentioned with the broadcast from Moscow with Stone and Snowden, there are details here.
Our episode is late, we are tired after making it through Salt Lake Comic Con. Hear highlights from that as well as a tribute to Gene Wilder. Oh, and we saw The Light Between Oceans and Morgan.

So… movies continued to come out this week, but not screened for critics. Instead, we decided to take a breath and run down our five favorite movies of the year (in no particular order) along with two honorable mentions from each of us. Then we gush over the movies we’re excited about for the rest of the year.

Andy’s honorable mentions:
Adam’s honorable mentions:
Top Five of 2016 (so far):
Worst to first, we have the remake of Ben-Hur, semi-true story about Iraq military contractor dude bros War Dogs, new modern western classic Hell or High Water, and animated masterpiece Kubo and the Two Strings (coming soon to an Oscar win for Best Animated Feature near you)

It’s a weird assortment of movies this week, with Pete’s Dragon, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Sausage Party. We go in order from most kid-friendly to adult and tell you where you can find us at Salt Lake Comic Con Sept 1-3.

Suicide Squad confounds critics and critical aggregators, but kills it at the box office. Adam and Andy break down everything wrong with the movie, everything right with it, and everything wrong with Rotten Tomatoes.

Guardians of the Galaxy. Characters, not plot. The old gray battleship of DC. Don’t let marketing people cut your movie.
Bad Moms brings the funny, Batman: The Killing Joke is funny, but in a different, disturbing, awful way, and Jason Bourne is well. . . Jason Bourne in a followup to the popular spy franchise.

Bad Moms – When good moms decide to blow off all the things they do to keep their kids’ lives running, this is what happens. Also musical montages. Kathryn Hahn and Christina Applegate steal the movie. Adam gives it 8/10 and Andy went a bit lower at a 6.5/10 for not being as cohesive as it could’ve been, and his longer review is here.
Batman: The Killing Joke is the adaptation of the 1988 graphic novel and it is a beautiful translation of the source material to screen. But it still retains a lot of its problematic elements and the tacked-on first act doesn’t help. We go really in depth on this, and this is a longer opinion article by Andy, but both agree this is a 7/10.
Jason Bourne has Jason Bourne in it! And shaky cam! And questionable depictions of technology! And ridiculous car chases sponsored by Dodge Charger! But Matt Damon and the rest of the cast are great. This isn’t as good as the first two, but better than the most recent one. 7/10 and a more full review here.
Lots of movies this week! We didn’t see Ice Age: Collision Course (sorry), but we have horror thriller Lights Out, BritCom Absolutely Fabulous, and of course Star Trek Beyond!

Lights Out is a cool concept but the director telegraphs every move and scare. Not good. 1/10
Absolutely Fabulous might be for fans of the series only, but it is uproariously good for those fans. Sweetie Darling. 7.5/10 and a more full review here.
Star Trek Beyond is part heady sci-fi that deconstructs the essence of the franchise, and part big dumb action movie thanks to director Justin Lin. All kinds of fans will find different things to like here. 7.5/10 and a more full review here.
It’s the Ghostbusters reboot! And a movie about Bryan Cranston and the drug trade!

The Infiltrator is the story of Robert Mazur who went undercover to follow the money of Pablo Escobar’s cartel in the 80’s. A true story! And great acting, but the pacing kinda drags. Adam gave it 5.5/10, Andy gave it a straight 5.
Ghostbusters! We’ve waited so long and were not disappointed. No one’s childhood was ruined. Everything is great, especially Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Stick around for the aftercredits sequence, and see it in 3D on Imax if you can! Adam calls it a perfect 10. Andy was bugged by a couple of pieces of fanservice and product placement, but otherwise it’s perfect: 9/10.
