In his recent dissertation, Dr. Isais Wellington Smith (pugilist and LA Native), explores and unveils the culture of Los Angeles boxing exploring cultural and racial tropes as well as the pedagogy of styles. Written from first hand experience as a fighter and cutman.

While boxing doesn't have transparent acts of racism nuance can be found within the language of gyms, 'Black fighter's cannot take a body shot' or 'Mexicans are different... you can hit them with everything and they keep coming.' Additionally, we spoke about how American black fighters are pigeonholed into adopting a role as an antagonist as opposed to be other Nation's fighters.

Dr Isais Wellington Smith, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri- Columbia Teaching in the Areas of Sociology of Sport, Social Inequalities, Race and Ethnic Minorities, Intro to Sociology, Sports Protest Movements, and Social Deviance.

He's known in the gym as Jay Boost @jay_boost700 at the Jackrabbits boxing gym where he trains and coaches today and the neighborhood he came from in Inglewood, CA. 

  In this edition of the podcast, Jay Boost sat down with Trevor and Garrity and told his entire story.  He survived getting shot on two separate occasions in his young 20s. The most incredible part of his story is when he taught himself how to walk again after being paralyzed from the second time he got shot.  He walks with a limp with his right leg that drags, but other than that he's absolutely ripped everywhere else.    As he goes through his story from start to finish, Jay Boost has always seemed to have one foot in each world.  One in the streets, and one on the right path.  He told us all bout his boxing career from his start in the amateurs at 11 years old to an up and down pro career that was intertwined with his time in the streets.    Our guest this week tells an amazing story. We sat down to have a conversation with Luis Mora.  This interview had been a long time coming, but ended up working out for the better, because as Luis reminded me "I am honored you are interviewing me on Mexican Independence Day weekend -- I was MADE in Mexico you know!"

 

Luis has an interesting story.  Like many others he found his way to the gym early on in life and it served a few purposes, positive activity for the youngster, and very important to our guest an opportunity to strengthen his connection with his dad.

When Luis was a pro fighter his ring nickname was "THE MAYOR"  

He was a pro boxer who is also a long time city employee under current Mayor Eric Garcetti.  You don't see that every day.

On this episode of the Boxed In podcast Garrity got the opportunity to sit down and talk with Chris Cugliari. 

Both alumni of Notre Dame Boxing, Chris and Garrity start with briefly going back to their time in Bangladesh, the club, and Bengal Bouts mission. 

Chris was in town for amateur boxing event where he was out promoting the USA Boxing Alumni Association.  The two discuss the two year old association, it's purpose, and progress. 

In addition to being a founding organizer and integral part of the USA Boxing Alumni Association, Chris spends his time coaching Team DNA, a youth boxing program in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also the founder of Gloves Not Guns, an organization dedicated to using boxing as a tool to combat gun violence by connecting the growing fitness boxing community with nonprofit gyms in high crime areas.

He says his competition days are behind him (never say never), but back in his day he was a Bengal Bouts Champ, 2 year captain and president of Notre Dame's boxing program, and spent his post grad years competing in Chicago.

We are back in the Boxing TL;DR studio for this 30th episode of the Boxed In podcast. 

 

What is it about putting in measurable progress into a goal you have set for yourself that has such an intoxicating effect?

 

Trainer and boxer Trevor and Garrity begin by talking about some of the current happenings at the gym until they land on the main theme of today's episode.  We find ourselves at our best when we are putting in the work, doing the work for the sake of doing the work, simple as that. 

 

Depression is prevalent in society today and especially so in athletes.  We come from this hyper masculine world of boxing, where a fight of flight mode is putting constant stress on your brains.  The depression is there, it comes and it goes, and we talk about it in this episode. 

 

While inconclusive as to fighting depression overall, we only know what works best for us.  Put that work in, it's the best medicine we've found.  Boxing has been a element involved in some of my biggest points of happiness, and it has also been one of my biggest sources of misery.  

 

We know this isn't unique to boxing, let's talk about it now, no need to wait for another sad news event to have a discussion. 

 

In this episode of the Boxed In podcast we sat down to talk with John Brown of Kansas City, Kansas. 

John is known for many things in the world of boxing.  50+ years as an amateur boxing coach is his pride and joy. He's also known for starting a boxing equipment company, initially as a solve to his own product problems, that grew to become the largest equipment provider in amateur boxing without a doubt. 

We talked about the genesis story of Ringside Boxing, pivotal  moments in his entrepreneurial career, some of the various product inventions he created and distributed. 

We talked about the importance of boxing in a young person's development, improving the safety of the sport, and the amateur game.

Trevor and Garrity have just wrapped up doing the first week weight check in of the Weight Loss Challenge Extravaganza as they sit down to record episode 28.

Hosts recall the adventure they took to the valley the night prior when they took almost all of Jackrabbits Boxing Gym to the Bash Boxing show. Panic aside, punctuality is something Garrity and Trevor may never agree on.

The conversation brings us to a point at which we talk about the importance of a matchmaker. We may answer some questions for you if you're coming to this episode not exactly knowing what a matchmaker is.

And for you more savvy folks, boxers and family of boxers, Garrity offers some advise on how you could help further your career if you took an active roll in assisting the promoters & matchmakers.
