So many boxing figures have become literally cultural icons, if not veritable juggernauts. Don King is such a character, and he had to get his start somewhere.

In the early 1970s, Don King signed his first fighter Jeff Merritt, aka "Candy Slim," a troubled, hard-hitting heavyweight. You can probably already guess how that went.
