Brachial Plexus Injury in Newborns with Michelle

Listen Later

This week we talk to Michelle about her son's Brachial Plexus Injury he sustained during birth. The Brachial Plexus is a group of nerves that signals from the spinal cord to the shoulder, arm, and hand. The Brachial Plexus Injury/Brachial Plexus Palsy occurs usually after a labor complication of shoulder dystocia, when the baby is stuck on the pelvis during delivery. This leads to the nerves are stretched, compressed, or ripped or torn from the spinal cord. This can cause weakness, intense pain, or loss of feeling in the arm, should, and hand.

We talk about how it has affected his physical development and the accommodations needed to help him gain strength and movement in his arm. After realizing how common, but not well known, this injury is, she decided to spread awareness to reach parents.

We circle back to how women are often dismissed in the medical system about what we're feeling in our own bodies.

Disclaimer: We talk about traumatic birth experiences and injuries to both mom and baby in this episode.
