Macron launched a new fund that has already raised $700 million, primarily from France's wealthiest families and corporations. While the largesse of the wealthy is appreciated, their ability to suddenly give away nearly a billion in cash underscores deep economic inequality in France and elsewhere. Paris-based oil and gas giant, TOTAL SA, raked in profits of more than $13 billion last year, during the same period that the so-called Yellow Vest citizen protests demanded Macron reverse a new gas tax hike that fell disproportionately on low- and middle-income households.  Yet where were France's billionaires then? Why didn't TOTAL cover the $4.2 billion tax instead of the citizenry, when the company could have paid the entire thing and still walked away with $10 billion in profits to spare?
