Brain Lock: Change Your Behavior, Change Your Brain (OCD Recovery)

Listen Later

"If I don't pray enough, something bad is going to happen to me or my family"
"Why did I just think about jumping in front of a train? Am I crazy?
"Did I lock the door? What if I didn't lock the door? Omg, I didn't lock the door...did I?"
OCD is an ugly monster. It's always hungry and never gets full. Living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has been one of the greatest challenges and the greatest blessings in my life. There were days when I thought about taking my life, just to silence the noise in my head. There were days when I felt on top of the world because I found so much clarity in learning more about myself. There were days when I would spend at least 16 hours a day anxiously obsessing over the same question in my mind, for weeks.
OCD attacked my confidence, my relationships, my faith, and my own self-image. When I was finally diagnosed, I felt a sense of relief because I was able to give all of this a name. I was able to better understand why I thought the way that I thought, and why I did the things that I did. And even though I, through the power of my own mind, overcame and recovered from Emetophobia and Scrupulosity, OCD has still shown up as Harm OCD and ROCD over the last few years.
So I decided to pick up this book, Brain Lock by Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD**, and learn more about OCD and discovery new ways of freeing myself.
This episode talks about:
- Explaining obsessions and compulsions
- Defining the true meaning of mindfulness
- What happens to the brain of someone with OCD
Lessons you'll learn: How to combat OCD thoughts
- Pay less attention to the unpleasant sensations to weaken the brain circuits associated with them
- Accept the "bad" thought as an obstacle to overcome
