  • Abandoned at Sea: The Cruise Adventure No One Signed Up For!

    Send us a text

A group of eight cruise passengers, consisting of six Americans and two Australians, were left stranded in São Tomé after their car broke down during a private day trip, causing them to miss the ship's departure. Despite their efforts to contact the ship, the captain refused to allow them back on board. To make matters worse, the group was left without their belongings, including essential medications for some members.

As they sought a solution, they encountered another passenger, Julia, who had been abandoned after a separate incident and appeared to have suffered a stroke. The group, now nine, relied on the assistance of a local port agent and a US representative on the island to help navigate their predicament.

They managed to book flights to Gambia, the ship's next destination, using a single credit card belonging to Jay and Jill Campbell. Their journey involved a grueling 15-hour flight with multiple layovers in four countries, only to learn that the ship had skipped the Gambia port. Undeterred, they then embarked on a 15-hour drive to Dakar, where the ship was docked. Throughout this ordeal, the cruise line remained largely unresponsive, and the group faced ridicule from fellow cruisers online, who deemed their delay a breach of the cruiser's code.

    Send us a text

n the 1820s, Scottish conman Gregor MacGregor pulled off one of history's most audacious scams by inventing a fake country called Poyais. He convinced British investors to buy land and bonds for this so-called utopia, promising lush, fertile land and a booming capital city. To sell the dream, MacGregor produced a polished, official-looking guidebook complete with maps, illustrations, and even fake currency.

Hundreds of eager settlers, believing they were heading to paradise, embarked on a perilous journey to Poyais—only to arrive in a desolate, uninhabited jungle. Many perished from disease and starvation, realizing too late they'd been duped. Despite his fraudulent scheme, MacGregor was eventually arrested for fraud in France, but remarkably, he was acquitted. Unfazed, he continued his life of deception. MacGregor's Poyais scam remains one of the most successful and audacious acts of securities fraud in history.

  • The Original Illegal Aliens: Cortez' Invasion and the Conquest of Aztec Mexico"

    Send us a text

Bernal Díaz del Castillo's The True History of the Conquest of New Spain is a firsthand account of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. A foot soldier under Hernán Cortés, Díaz del Castillo sought to provide a more accurate and detailed account than previous works, particularly the one written by Cortés's chaplain, Francisco López de Gómara. Díaz del Castillo felt that Gómara’s account overlooked the contributions of the common soldiers, and he aimed to correct that imbalance. He began writing his memoirs nearly thirty years after the conquest, drawing from his memory and personal records.

Díaz del Castillo’s narrative recounts several pivotal moments in the conquest, including the early expeditions to Yucatán, the battles with indigenous populations, and the eventual capture of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán. He reveals the motivations of the conquistadors, focusing on their thirst for wealth, glory, and the desire to spread Christianity. Throughout his account, he highlights the extreme hardships faced by the Spanish soldiers—battles, injuries, disease, and hunger. Díaz del Castillo also offers a window into the culture and customs of the indigenous peoples, describing their religious practices, advanced city planning, and complex social structures.

Considered a vital historical source, Díaz del Castillo’s work stands out for its firsthand perspective and its detailed depictions of the events surrounding the conquest. His writing style is more accessible and less formal than many other historical works of the time, making it easier for modern readers to engage with. The True History of the Conquest of New Spain offers a multifaceted view of this crucial event in history, showcasing both the bravery and brutality of the conquest, as well as its cultural and historical complexities.

  • The 47 Ronin: Revenge, Seppuku, and a Whole Lot of Samurai Drama!

    Send us a text

The story of the Forty-seven Ronin, also known as the Akō Incident, is a legendary tale that embodies the samurai code of honor, bushidō. It centers on 47 samurai who became rōnin after their lord, Asano Naganori, was compelled to commit seppuku for assaulting the court official Kira Yoshinaka.

Over the course of two years, the ronin carefully planned their revenge, ultimately killing Kira, fully aware they would face punishment for their actions. The shogunate found itself in a difficult position: while the samurai had upheld the principles of bushido, they had also defied the shogunate’s authority. As a result, the ronin were sentenced to death but were granted the option to commit seppuku as a way to preserve their honor. Their graves can be found at Sengakuji Temple in Tokyo.

The story, often fictionalized as Chūshingura, has become a cornerstone of Japanese culture, especially during the Meiji era when Japan sought to reconnect with its traditional roots amidst rapid modernization. The tale has inspired countless adaptations in plays, films, and television shows, with the 1962 film Chūshingura by Hiroshi Inagaki being the most recognized version for Western audiences. Additionally, the 2013 American film 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves, offers a stylized, fantastical take on the story.
