Dr. Laura Johnson is a successful scientist, and mother to two elementary-school aged children. She works for big pharma doing cutting-edge cancer research based on 'teaching' the patient's immune system to recognize and destroy their disease. Coming from a lower middle-class household, her father often worked 7 days a week, and her mother was functionally unavailable, fighting her own emotional battles. As a result, Laura grew up with minimal supervision, a lot of freedom to go out and experience life, and learn by making mistakes. Educated in 'the school of life', she learned that whatever she wanted, she could make happen through sheer determination, and decided to he 'happy', whatever that took. This became a drive to do something 'meaningful', and carried Laura through a long Bachelor's degree, financed by working multiple part-time jobs, then followed quickly by a Master's degree and then a Ph.D. in science. She has been a cashier, a contractor for the Canadian government (Endangered Species protection), a wildlife biologist/research assistant living in a tent in the Arctic, a forensic scientist, a university teaching assistant, a technician in several Biotech companies, a university (Assistant) professor (x2), and Senior Director of a research department in big Pharma. Laura also loves to read books about young vampires in love, ski, ice skate, ride bike (previously road, now mountain), and do yoga.
