Proverbs 29-15 will be our springboard- -The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.- The rest of the chapter will be surveyed to discover specific areas of her children-s lives for which she has expectations. But we will also consider this theme topically, beginning in the Book of Proverbs and looking to other portions of scripture, particularly highlighting key mothers.----Not every believer has been blessed with the faithful presence of a biological mother. However, just as men of God step in to assume fatherly roles in the lives of the fatherless, so does God bring into our lives motherly figures to lovingly, faithfully, prayerfully invest in our lives. In particular, many Christians throughout history have seen the church as a mother in our lives. As such, the church invests in and nurtures us, disciplines us and restores us back to health. Just as a foolish son is a shame to his mother, a foolish Christian is a shame to the church. In the end the hope of a physical mother is the same as the hope of a spiritual mother, that her children find, savor, and walk in wisdom-

Overview: God has spoken- He called and spoke to Moses and Aaron declaring the way of salvation for their firstborn. In Chapter 12 God spoke, declaring that this would be a new beginning for the Israelites. Then God spoke very specifically, telling them that salvation would come by way of a sacrificial lamb without blemish that was to be chosen and killed at a specific day and time. Subsequently God spoke, instructing them how the blood of the lamb was to be applied on the doorposts of their homes. And again God spoke, telling them that they were to remember this day as a memorial and keep it as a feast to all generations.----Moses and Aaron heard the word from God and were commanded to pass that word on to the people of God. But there had to come a time when all God had said to Moses and Aaron would not only to be heard but obeyed, or else destruction would follow by way of the tenth and final plague. This is where we are in our study in Exodus this coming Sunday. It was time for action on the part of the people who have been called, set apart, and about to be delivered. Moses spoke to the people, -Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb- -12-21-. --These were the words that God spoke to Moses, and Moses declared them to the people. But what was the people-s response to these words- Praise the Lord, they bowed their heads and worshipped -v. 27-. But significantly, they also obeyed- they not only heard the word of the LORD, but obeyed that Word- -v. 28-. This is a wonderful picture of the obedience of God-s people to His word in all generations to follow. Are you only a hearer of the Word.

Overview: The main theme of this section of Jesus- Sermon on the Mount, comprised of the second half of Matthew chapter 5, is that of righteousness. Jesus introduces this theme in verses 17-20 where He proclaims that He has fulfilled the Law of Moses so that only a righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees will qualify one for the kingdom of heaven. Jesus continues by illustrating what this righteousness looks like by following the general formula of- -1- Stating the Old Testament commandment- -2- Declaring His authoritative intensification of the commandment- and -3- Giving applicatory steps to obey the commandment. This week we will examine the third of these six commands where Jesus deals quite forcefully with divorce.----The Bible refers to human marriage as a mystery which God uses to illustrate the most magnificent eternal truths. And here in our text, Jesus protects the sanctity of marriage by authoritatively intensifying the commandment against adultery and divorce.
