Pastor Jeremy continues his series, The Way You Pray, Sunday in Glendive.
Matt 6:12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
Matt 6:12 (TPT) Forgive us the wrongs we have done as
we ourselves release forgiveness to those who have
wronged us.
● This statement leads us to believe that the way
God will forgive us is the way we forgive others.
● You could maybe say it this way: If we forgive we
will be forgiven.
● Or this way: If we don’t forgive we won’t be
forgiven.
● Matt 6:14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if
you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither
will your Father forgive your trespasses.
● We can’t forget about the blood of Jesus that
provides: forgiveness, justification, cleanses us,
redeems us, and sanctifies us
Matt 18:21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord,
how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive
him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not
say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times
seven. 23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a
certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his
servants. 24 And when he had begun to settle accounts,
one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand
talents. 25 But as he was not able to pay, his master
commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children
and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 The
servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master,
have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 27 Then
the master of that servant was moved with compassion,
released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 “But that
servant went out and found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on
him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what
you owe!’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down at his feet
and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I
will pay you all.’ 30 And he would not, but went and
threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 So
when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they
were very grieved, and came and told their master all
that had been done. 32 Then his master, after he had
called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave
you all that debt because you begged me. 33 Should
you not also have had compassion on your fellow
servant, just as I had pity on you?’ 34 And his master
was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he
should pay all that was due to him. 35 “So My heavenly
Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart,
does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”
Luke 6:37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged.
Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.
Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be
given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken
together, and running over will be put into your bosom.
For with the same measure that you use, it will be
measured back to you.”
Where does that leave us??
1. If we struggle with bitterness, resentment, and
unforgiveness have we “lost” our salvation??
a. Eph 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not
let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor
give place to the devil.
b. Eph 4 :26 (TPT) But don’t let the passion of
your emotions lead you to sin! Don’t let
anger control you or be fuel for revenge, not
for even a day. 27 Don’t give the slanderous
accuser, the Devil, an opportunity to
manipulate you!
c. Eph 4:26 (NLT) And “don’t sin by letting anger
control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while
you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a
foothold to the devil.
2. The “unforgiving christian” is not lost or headed to
eternal damnation, however they are walking in
disobedience. They are walking in the flesh. They
are choosing to live in a state of disagreement with
the Lord.
3. You could say it this way: we would rather be
angry than joyful, or we have chosen resentment
instead of peace, or we would rather hold a
grudge than enjoy daily fellowship with God, we
would rather give the devil a foothold in our life
than walk in the freedom that forgiveness has
provided us.
Back to “The Way You Pray”
● This time in our daily prayer life is a good
opportunity for us to “deal” with some things.
● You could say it this way...”When you pray, GET
OVER IT”
● Cast your cares on Him for He cares for you.
● This is when we vent, this is who we vent to
● Unforgiveness is like drinking poison while waiting
for the person who wronged you to die.
● Take advantage of the framework the Lord has
provided you and during your prayer time, deal
with forgiveness.
