- Dogs can smell stress in humans – and it alters their own behavior. University of Briston researchers say they found that our pet canines experience “emotional contagion” from the smell of human stress — leading them to make more “pessimistic” choices, and affecting their ability to learn. Previous research in humans suggests that the smell of a stressed person subconsciously affects the emotions and choices made by others near them, which led the researchers to wonder if the same is true with dogs.

- Are CDs on their way back? Well, they’re definitely on their way back into a new Subaru, as a “throwback” option. The latest generation WRX has a number of ‘finishing touches’ available, allowing buyers to add all manner of extras, such as mud flaps, an engine underguard, and a first aid kit. But the most interesting – at least for 90s kids – is the optional CD player, neatly fitted under the center console’s armrest. Of course, with the shift to downloads and streaming services, not many manufacturers even offer a CD option anymore, but if you still have some discs kicking around, Subaru’s $375 CD Player Kit might be worth splashing out on. FUNNER SUMMER:

What does the “perfect summer” look like to you? Lots of road trips? Camping? Back yard barbecues? Golf? According to a new survey, the absolutely ideal summer must include the following: 14 days with loved ones, 8 sunrises watched, and 11 dips in the water. That’s from a poll of 2,000 adults in the US, which found that some of the most enjoyable things about summer include: spending time with family and friends (44%), enjoying BBQs (43%), longer days (42%), warmer weather (37%), and swimming (31%). On the down side, people were also asked about things that can ruin a beautiful summer. The top answer was too much heat, followed by being sick, or injured. And the average person expects to have to deal with one sunburn, and go through 2 bottles of sunscreen.

❑ The annual flu shot could soon be a thing of the past. Scientists at Oregon Health & Science University are working on a revolutionary formula that might mean we’d only need one flu shot – ever. That’s right: No annual vaccinations – OR worrying about whether this year’s shot will match the flu strains circulating around the world. Unlike traditional flu shots that target the virus’s outer surface – which constantly changes – this approach focuses on the virus’s internal structure. They compare it to targeting the engine of a car instead of its paint job.

STRANGE SPORTS THAT WERE ONCE PART OF THE SUMMER OLYMPICS:

The 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony started on Friday. If you think the new-to-the Olympics sport of breakdancing is odd, check out these events, which were once a part of the proceedings…

☞ Tug of War: It was an event at 5 games between 1900-20. If neither team succeeded to pull the other over the line after 5 minutes, a winner was declared based on who performed the best.

☞ Club Swinging: An event twice, in 1904 and 1932. Participants would perform a routine by swinging clubs that looked like bowling balls.

☞ Running Deer: In the early 1900s, competitors shot at a deer-shaped target which would move, or “run,” a distance of 75 feet.

☞ Dueling Pistols: In 1906, this bizarre event saw competitors shoot wax bullets at human-shaped targets dressed in long coats from a 20 or 30-meter distance.

☞ Fencing With Sticks: A one-time event in 1904, “Singlestick” was similar to fencing, but the weapon was a rounded wooden stick, about 34 inches long. (So – hockey?)

☞ Plunge for Distance: In 1904, this event saw competitors dive into a pool, then try not to move at all until one minute was up, or until they naturally floated to the surface. (It made for an incredible spectator experience…)

☞ Solo Synchronized Swimming: Between 1984-92, the intent was for the swimmer to synchronize their movements to music. The solo Olympic sport has since evolved into a team effort now known as Artistic Swimming. (But the very idea of “solo” synchronized swimming must have raised some eyebrows at the time!)

When we driving across Canada in the mid 60s. My dad would stop at shell stations because they would give us wax pan flutes, wax lips, wax shells and so on. We could eat them when done playing but we’re not allowed to swallow the wax. We loved it

GERMS DON’T REST – EVEN WHEN YOU DO:

A media report quotes Dr. Gareth Nye, a program lead for medical science, as saying: “Your pillowcases could be considered dirtier than the toilet.” The good news? The good doctor also feels that since the bacteria on your pillowcase “are very likely to be from you to begin with, therefore (they) aren’t harmful.” That doesn’t mean, however, that you can just let your pillows bathe in your perspiration all summer long. Studies show that we can lose 500-700ml of sweat on an average night – which is absorbed by night clothing or bedding. Dr. Nye points to one study that found a typical pillow has as many as 16 different species of fungus and literally millions of fungus spores. He suggests we wash our sheets and pillowcases at least once per week – perhaps slightly less often if you sleep alone. 

⇒ A new study says that eating one avocado every day has some amazing health benefits, including improved sleep and diet quality. Penn State University researchers say they were already aware that eating avocados is linked to lowered risk of cardiovascular disease, but this new study found that people who consumed avocados on a daily basis for 6 months saw an improvement in their scores for sleep health, diet quality and blood lipids, such as cholesterol, without adversely affecting body weight.

SURPRISE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME RULES:

Gwen Stefani is getting her own star tomorrow, which means she must have passed these perhaps-unexpected rules…

✪ Anyone can nominate a star: There is a $250 fee to submit an application. Applications must include a written promise from the star or his/her rep to attend the star unveiling, if approved. And the applicant has to agree to financially sponsor the star presentation. More about those coming up…

✪ The star must attend the unveiling: This is known as the “Springsteen Clause”, after he was nominated by a fan, and it was discovered there was nothing in writing that said the star must show up to be honored. (We’re guessing they make exceptions for the dead?)

✪ Someone has to pay for it: When it started in 1987, a star cost about $3,500. This year? $55,000. Next year? $75,000, “due to rising costs”. And who pays? The person who does the nominating is responsible for “sponsorship costs” once accepted.

✪ Stars have a two-year window to schedule their ceremony: From the website: “Those selected for stars have a 2-year time frame in which to set their ceremony date” before the selections expire.

✪ There are special rules for posthumous honors: Ah – here we are. Just one posthumous award can be given each year. And these must be a 2 year or more wait after the date of the star’s death, to prevent marginal stars from being swept in by emotion immediately after their death. (Because there are no “marginal stars” already enshrined, are there? I’m looking at you, Chris Berman, Tinker Bell, and Guy Fieri!)

✪ It requires at least a 5-year career: To receive a star, one must achieve longevity in their entertainment category of 5 years or more”. (So much for 15 minutes of fame?)

✪ Companies can’t receive stars (but there’s an asterisk): The Walk of Fame Committee does something else called the Awards of Excellence. These are done on private property. They look like a Walk of Fame star, with a different font. For example, at the El Capitan Theatre, there is a star for the Disney Company, on private property, adjacent to the Walk of Fame.

• ★JoJo Siwa is sharing more details about how she plans to become a mother to triplets through surrogacy. In a video for Cosmopolitan’s “If It Were Me” series, she explains that because she is gay, she needs “to plan a pregnancy much different than a straight person, I actually want to take three eggs, fertilize three eggs, and have three surrogates”. The plan, she said, is that “technically, they’ll all be the same batch, but they would all be born separately…and they can be like triplets, but like, not.” The “Dance Moms” alum said earlier: “I got my three kids’ names picked out — Freddie, Eddie and Teddie.”

After passing their driving test, it takes someone just ten weeks to become a bad driver. A study of 2,000 car owners found the average new road user lets bad habits creep in less than three months after getting their driver's license. The two things we do almost immediately are not holding the steering wheel in the correct position and failing to check our mirrors every time we make a lane change. Only 40 percent of women and 32 percent of men believe they have bad driving habits.

New research out of Scotland says that cyclists have a 47% lower risk of early death and a 10% lower risk of hospitalization for any reason, than commuters who drive or take the train. The study followed more than 82,000 UK residents over 18 years, who ranged in age from 16-74 at the beginning. Commuting by bike was associated with a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer, a 24% lower risk of hospitalization for heart disease and a 20% lower risk of being prescribed drugs for mental health problems. 

- Bruce Springsteen – is officially a billionaire. According to a “conservative” estimate by Forbes, his net worth is $1.1 billion. In 2021, he sold his music catalog for an estimated $500-$550 million, the biggest transaction ever for a single artist’s body of work. 

- Prince’s planned Netflix biopic is on hold because his estate has a problem with its 9-hour length, according to a report. The 2018 deal for the doc called for a 6-hour series, but director Ezra Edelman’s final cut currently runs 3 hours longer, which the estate says violates their agreement.

➢ Lamborghini Started Out Making Tractors: At some point, a beef with Enzo Ferrari led to the company making sports cars, but it still makes tractors to this day.

➢ Shell used to literally sell shells: In the 1800s, antique dealer Marcus Samuel expanded his business by selling exotic seashells. This required a large import/export infrastructure. When he died, his sons took over and developed an interest in importing and exporting oil.

➢ Avon used to sell books: In the 1800s, founder David McConnell was a door-to-door book salesman. To get his foot in the door, he offered women a free vial of perfume that he made himself. It turned out that his perfume was much more popular than the books…

➢ Taco Bell was originally a hot dog stand: In 1948, Glen Bell ran Bell’s Drive-In, selling hot dogs and burgers. But he noticed the popularity of the café across the street, which sold tacos. He got friendly with staff there, learned their recipes, and opened his first taco stand in 1951.

➢ Play Doh Started as Wallpaper Cleaner: The company was a struggling soap manufacturer that started making wallpaper cleaner, at a time when coal soot was an issue inside people’s homes. A relative of one of the owners had a daycare and gave some of the wallpaper cleaner to the kids to play with — and they loved it. The formula was adjusted by adding color and a scent — and Play Doh was born.

The 76-ear-old dialed 911 (999) a total of 42 times. On one occasion he dialed emergency services and demanded paramedics come immediately — when one was already in his house.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: VANDALS BROKE CAR WINDOW WITH FROZEN STEAK _ Some vandals use crowbars or bricks to smash car windows, but a guy in Spain used a frozen steak. A laptop and other valuables were taken. The frozen steak was left behind on the car’s front seat.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN KILLED CHICKEN IN SUBWAY _ A woman in China was told she couldn’t bring a live chicken on the city’s subway system, so she slaughtered the bird on the spot.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: TAEKWONDO FAMILY TO THE RESCUE _ When a family arrived at their business in Katy, Texas, after lunch, they heard a scream from the business next door, a cell phone shop. The family — mom, dad, and their three adult kids — rushed next door to find a man on top of a female employee. Dad took care of the attacker single-handedly. The others didn’t need to help, even though they were all fourth-degree black belts in taekwondo. Yep, next to the cell phone store is a taekwondo instruction school, and every family member is an instructor. Sheriff deputies arrived and arrested a 19-year-old for assault.
